NEXUS 7: Time to buy a tablet methinks...
The NEXUS 7 is here. Finally, a simple, affordable tablet to replace my broken ebook reader.
I've never been interested in buying a tablet, simply because it's overkill and overpriced for what I need it to do (read ebooks). I'm interested now.
It's currently available for pre-order only through Google Play US. Shipping in mid-July.

Why not the Amazon Kindle Fire? Same price, available now. Android OS with some propriety Amazon stuff on there.

But yes, either of these would satisfy my needs for a tablet. Will only buy once I'v broken/lost/got bored with my Kindle Keyboard ereader. Which is fantastic, so I'm unlikely to get bored anytime soon.

The Kindle Fire restricts content.
Oh and the Nexus has better processor, and the latest OS (Android Jellybean).

..but no 3G. I'd still end up browsing/checking email/Facebook etc on my phone, so it just becomes a pretty e-book reader. I'll stick with my Kindle

Some very cheap android tablets out there. $150 can gt you a 7" model with ICS running on it if you want a low cost entry model to try it out. Ainol is one of the brands I this category.
Also agree with nev. why get 3G when you can hotspot?

Even my very old Nokia 5200 can be a hotspot (via cable, but still a hotspot).

Wow, iphone now have that capability? Won't that stop iPad users from buying the 3G/4G version? Probably not.

The hot spot only makes sense in Singapore . The 3G iPad is for overseas trips
Re: NEXUS 7: Time to buy a tablet methinks...
Pre-ordered my Nexus 7
Decided to splurge and get the 16GB version, it's only $50 more. No delivery date yet, but here's hoping it will come soon!

Re: NEXUS 7: Time to buy a tablet methinks...
Actually I rarely use 3G when overseas because the roaming rate is just insane. I only use it if I have no choice (for example, in Japan where buying a local pre-paid data card is not possible) or if my company is paying. If a local SIM card is available, I buy one to replace my Singapore SIM card. I use the local SIM card for calls and data, and use my spare Nokia phone to take any calls to my Singapore number.expat yorkshire wrote:The hot spot only makes sense in Singapore . Me neither. I use 3G all the time in my home country and almost never when roaming.

Data roaming is getting cheaper, but you've got to pre-sign up for it.
Data Bridge by Singtel and I know there's a Starhub one as well.

Re: NEXUS 7: Time to buy a tablet methinks...
Using your iPhone hotspot while data roaming is going to be extremely expensive , therefore as Nev said it makes sense to buy a pay as you go data sim and stick it in your iPad . This is exactly what I did in the uk 10pounds sim card lasted 2 weeks and gave me fast InternetMorrolan wrote:i'm not sure i'm getting this...expat yorkshire wrote:The hot spot only makes sense in Singapore . Just making the point that it does make sense to have a 3G pad rather than wifi only

So are you happy not to receive any phone calls sms on your sing number while overseas or you now going to carry a second iphone as your sim will only work in an iphoneMorrolan wrote:but with that same argument, i can get a local sim for my phone and still use it as a hotspot.expat yorkshire wrote:Using your iPhone hotspot while data roaming is going to be extremely expensive , therefore as Nev said it makes sense to buy a pay as you go data sim and stick it in your iPad . Re: NEXUS 7: Time to buy a tablet methinks...
still looks expensive to me. I usually rely on free wi-fi when overseas, or buy a local data card. Free wi-fi is more common than you think (well except for Japan, or 5-star hotels in the US where you have to pay at least US$10/day for internet via a cable in your room, no wi-fi! very strange). If I'm out with local friends, I would use their phones as hotspotsFat Bob wrote:Data roaming is getting cheaper, but you've got to pre-sign up for it.

I usually buy data sim for my ipad when overseas and then use voip buster App for sms and calls. This will allow the receiver to see my Singapore number when an sms is sent and they can then reply directly to my Singapore numbernev wrote:still looks expensive to me.
