Cats & Dogs

Post by JJ » 16th Sep, '11, 15:45

So, deciding whether to bite the bullet at long last and get myself a dog.

Questions for those who have or have had dogs (as this will be my first one!):

- I have two cats, or rather, 2 pampered feline princesses, and I want to ensure that they all get along from the get-go or at least avoid having them never speak to me again... Any advice or learnings for me on how best to minimise the stress all round

- General training: any recommendations?

- Dogwalkers and obedience school recommendations?

Furbaby, I am PMing you next!!!

Cool. Get a pitbull, he'll soon sort out the moggies, and won't mind the odd scratch along the way!

usually, cats should be ok with a dog (after a while) when the dog that is brought into their territory is very young. still, it can take a fair while to get them used to each other.

if you want to go for an older dog, i would follow FB's suggestion and get something large enough to sort the cats out in the first 5 minutes.

Get a young pup -it will still take a long while but will work

bringing a full grown dog in means chaos w/a capital C
I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once!

I just read something recently about mixing cats with dogs. They have different modes of communication. For example, certain eye movements are interpreted as aggression to one but signal retreat to the other. But if they are introduced as puppies and kittens they learn how to read the others' signals, they become, in a sense, bilingual. So, I'm thinking if you introduce a puppy to the older cats, they will find him utterly confusing, but the puppy will learn their lingo. Probably via swift scratch to the snout. :)

IMHO if you do this, you have to give the cats safety zones - high places etc, where the puppy can't get at them. And at night I'd make a habit to put the puppy to sleep in his own room, a spare room or something, with someplace for him to sleep and fresh water etc, or you could let him sleep in your room with the door closed to give the cats the run of the house and a break to be just by themselves and de-stress.

Agree that a puppy is the way to go (so long as it's a rescue dog) but going to ask a question completely unrelated to cats.

Do you have a live-in maid? Or at least somebody that would come live at your place when you go away? Otherwise I'm of the opinion that dogs and expat lifestyles don't really mix.

Even with our luck with petsitters over the years (and two of those were thanks to you!), we don't leave the cats for more than about 10 days at a time. It is limiting, and a dog is so much more.

JJ - i'm still rooting for a mature-but-cat-savvy rescue dog ;)

my Princess (don't judge, she was 9 when i got her, already used to the name) loves kitties, and prefers their company to that of other dogs :)

No, no, no. No plans for a dog AT ALL. Jonesey is being a really good boy -- hasn't scratched the new couch at all and I really can't see giving him any reason to. He's king of the castle and I think he likes it that way.........despite trying to bolt out the front door when he gets the opportunity
