Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
Hmmmmm. I have a rice cooker that I have just worked out how to use so a pressure cooker sounds a good addition. Apart from my maid T, my other fave kitchen gadgets are my knives - Scanpan and two little fry pans that fry one egg perfectly each. Fab.
"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

That's the problem with it that I forsee have too . I normally use a wok to deep fry. OK might be easier to just use a wok.

Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
pressure cookers are great. we don't have one yet, but my mother has used one for as far back as i can remember: potatoes, vegetables, even stews or thick soups. you can prepare stuff really fast in them. she actually wore one out is and is now on her second one in 40 years.Bender wrote:8 minutesFresh Mint wrote:Well, for example, how long would it take you to boil new potatoes?
it's on my list to get.

Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
I got one as a wedding present in 1989, so big and heavy I could hardly lift it. I think I used it 3 times without the lid (or pressure) to cook pasta, and gave it away when we moved to Sg in 2002.
I feel very grown up; I just bought my first stainless steel pans.

Rat trap. Fridge (only when full of beer). Esky (when full of beer because fridge is over flowing or when used to drown rat caught in the rat trap).

All this talk of bloody rats has fuelled my imagination. Han just came in throught the catflap with a black tail sticking out of his mouth and I panicked; how to get the damn thing off him - preferably without touching it - and what to do with it next. Thankfully it was only a lizard.
Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
Mine are barred from using the cat flap. Too many corpses in the house put paid to that.

Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
On my wish list:
A rice cooker, but I haven't had the time to browse the new models they all seem kinda fancy.
A coffee press. I just want one.
New frying pans - the ones I have now are teflon which I want to replace with WMF or whatever that's called. I got one of their pots recently on sale and I love it.
A new vacuum cleaner. I love my little vacuum but it doesn't have the duster brush attachment, which I always wish I'd checked the model for when I bought it.
A good water filter system.

Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
I bought a rice cooker way back but then I was told it didn't do brown rice (all I cook) very well so I never used it. J the cleaner got yet another gift. TBH I don't see the point of rice cookers if I don't cook it often, or in huge amounts.
I bought a Brita Water Jug after a couple of weeks here, drinking nasty chloriney water. Makes a huge difference but unfortunately they make a big deal of stressing they don't filter out fluoride, as the Oz authorities want us all to be fluorinated. The only sooper dooper reverse osmosis systems I could find have to be fitted to taps, so I'll wait until we buy a house for that.

I've actually a very similar story to the one you wrote except it was with my parents and I recall seeing food splattered on the ceiling when I was a child. You're absolutely right about the modern pressure cookers but I just haven't got around to it yet. (read: mustered up the courage to get over my illogical fear)Bender wrote:Modern ones are safe. If you need really pure water, you could investigate a benchtop distiller. They start at under $300.

That took longer than I expected, M. I choose not to use fluoride.

Talking about Brita Water Jugs, has anyone seen these in Singapore?

The Boys have one of these ceramic ones; looks very nice on the benchtop. We don't have room for one.

Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
no worries, but i'm not sure reverse osmosis will do the trick. i thought you need an alumina filter to filter out fluoride ions. can't find the size of fluoride ions, but reverse osmosis membranes only get ions larger than 1 Ångstrom, IIRC.Kooky wrote:That took longer than I expected, M. Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
I was given some advice a few years ago in Singapore, but the person who knew all about this moved back to Perth, and I sent her an email recently but it bounced. No rush, as I say, but I would eventually like to know how to filter it out without totally replumbing a house.
I'm struggling to find fluoride-free toothpaste here without going organic = extortionately priced. I could get it in the pharmacies in Sg.
(NB It's to do with my thyroid.)
Sorry - back to kitchen gadgets...

Re: Favourite kitchen gadgets
want to get gadget:
electric coffee grinder, which, we found, can be used very effectively to grind spices, such as cloves, dried chillies etc, so you can make your own spice mixes without getting RSI from using mortar and pestle.
