Low GI Sugar replacement?

Post by sundaymorningstaple » 27th Jul, '08, 14:49

I am looking for Xylitol which is a natural sugar replacement with a very low GI of 7 and 75% less carbs than sugar. It is sold under the brand name of Perfect Sweet™ by SweetLife™ in the UK and "Healthy by Nature Ltd" in the UK.

Anybody using low GI products know where I might find this sugar replacement here in Singapore? Kooky?

I didn't find it, sms, but I didn't look too hard as I hardly ever use sugar (and eat things made with it mainly when I'm out). You could try Brown Rice Paradise in Tanglin Mall, Supernature at ?Cuscaden?

I'm not using sugar either in daily life, but I've grown fond of Anzac biscuits and instead of buying them at import prices I though I'd try baking my own but I've been told (by a fellow follower of my diet program down in Aus) that she has baked some using Xylitol as a replacement for the sugar component and they turned out quite okay so I though I might give it a try (or at least my daughter I should say).

I'll give Brown Rice paradise a jingle to see if they carry it or know someone who does.

Thanks K.

sms I just remembered that the essliv.com folks stock a lot of Patrick Holford related stuff and he's a big fan of Xylitol.

Going to that site led me to this:

You could try the recipe with 75% less sugar instead. Might work.

Hey Kooky, thanks for that. Will check out their store. I spent an hour today before I realized you may well have an idea. :D

Burb, looking at the prices of that stuff @ $24/lb and the price of rolled oats & dessicated coconut & plain flour (all bloody cheap) I may well try it that way before going the Xylitol way. If it works great, if not, little lost..... ;)

Agave Nectar has a lower GI index - you need to tweak the recipe though and the temperature at which you bake.

Splenda is available in Singapore & has a 'baking' bulk version instead of the packets that works fine. Better than all the Sugar Alchols ("tols') in my mind
I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once!

Splenda - you know I read this and thought, Hey I have a big box of Splenda I've never even opened. But when I pulled it out of the cupboard it was hard as a rock! I can't even remember when or where I bought it. I would have gladly passed it on if it hadn't already passed on all by itself...sorry, SMS!

Maple Syrup is often mentioned in the nutrition books as a good natural alternative, but not sure about the GI content. :?: Needless to say, I don't bake.

SMS - I was just at Cold Storage Jelita and they sell Xylitol there - it's called something like 'Xyli-Sweet' but says Xylitol on the box as well. It's expensive though - $32 for a smallish box.

Skank - I've not found Splenda in the grocery stores here. Only place I've ever seen it is the American Club. I always 'import' it from the US when I visit. Where did you get your Splenda, Lili?

Sounds like more places are stocking it these days. It's expensive but IIRC you don't need much.

You know, Slinks, I think that my dad sent it to me in a care package. It had to be ages ago - I did Atkins before I even met Mr VS! How friggen OLD is that box? Funny though, it's hard as a rock but not an insect went near it...

For the buying of xylitol and splenda, try checking out better4u.sg which is a Singapore retailer

I realize this is a very old thread brought back to life by a spammer, but in case anyone needs it, I saw Spenda at Isetan supermarket on Scotts.

Yes, Splenda is now widely available here - Cold Storage regularly has it.
