Post by Dinosaur » 17th Apr, '09, 15:29

Anybody know if you soak/cook them in the same way as split peas? I'm thinking soak overnight then simmer for half an hour. What d'ya think?

Do you think half hour is enough Lili? To be honest, I thought I was buying split peas and only noticed split soy beans on the packet when I got home. They look exactly the same.

I'm going to cook an Old English Pea and Ham Soup at the weekend, in celebration of St George's Day next week (the English National Day that isn't). Though also has something to do with the fact that my freezers are groaning under a weight of excess gammon stock and would like to use some of it up.

Thing about simmering them is that you can take one out every so often, try it, and if it's done then there you have it. Are you in a rush? :)

Yum! I love pea & ham soup. I put up the recipe I use here last year.

given the oil content of soy beans i don't think your soy soup is going to look/taste anywhere near the original...

Yeh I take that on board Morrolan, but I've bought the bloody things now so I'm jolly well going to use them. The recipe I've got has somewhat less beans than Bender's recipe and some potato to thicken it up. Bearing in mind the oil content issue, I think I'd better go with my recipe this time.

Bender's recipe looks nice. I'll try that one if I get some pukka split peas. Interesting that he does not soak the beans. I thought that was essential to get rid of nasties but, come to think of it, that's probably the bigger pulses like kidney beans isn't it? Been AGES since I cooked any kind of pulses.

Well, you're dead right M. I thought it was quite nice but nothing like pea n ham soup. Mr PK was making some strange faces which I took to mean he didn't particularly like it.

So what am I going to do with the rest of the packet of beans? Have you got any decent recipes M? I've just done a google and it's come up with a lot of veggie dishes - a bit too veggie for me.

nope, we just trade 'em or crush 'em (for the oil). the remainder is used as cattle feed.

Or, in other words, feed them to something you want to eat!
