Dried mochi - how to cook?

Post by nev » 9th Apr, '08, 13:58

I had a wonderful bowl of white miso soup with mochi in it when I was in Tokyo; it was so good I can still taste it.

Last night, I found dried mochi disks in the supermarket. I'm not sure if it's the correct one, and I can't read Japanese so I don't know how to cook it. Does anyone know how long I have to boil it for? Any special tips?

If I want to grill the softened mochi, how do I prevent it from sticking to whatever it is I put it on?

Cheers :)

Not that this helps very much, but now I know what it is.

I googled cooking methods, but nothing definite came up. They all say "boil until soft", but how long for? What if it's soft on the outside but hard on the inside? And does the boiling time differ if I want to grill the mochi afterwards?

When it's soft enough that when you bite too much off and you end up choking on the mochi, you know it's done.

It's my favorite Japanese new year party trick.
