Dhactulose - one for our Dr's

Post by Possum » 5th Mar, '12, 14:02

Baby Pos (8months) has been suffering from terrible constipation. I was given Dhactulose by her pediatrician. Its still not a fun experience but is not as bad as before.

I would like to know whether Dhactulose can be taken daily for long periods of time without consequences. I read some sources that affirm this claim and others that deny it.
Any home remedies that people know work and are safe?

Cotton Buds and castor oil.
So…if you wish to wish a wish, you may swish for fish with my Ish wish dish.

Can't you just give baby pos back?

Lactulose is the active ingredient. I think the adverse effects of taking this for long periods (over a week) are more due to you HAVING to take it (i.e. you are constipated for all that time) than any side effects.

There are days when I would happily give them ALL back but unlike men, children are for life.

Ill keep on with the Dhactulose then x

Pos, have you identified a reason for the constipation? Any intolerances? Treat the cause, not the symptoms?

When I was a kid I would go a fortnight at a time without going, grew up with what I now know to be IBS, and years later here I am with multiple food intolerances.

Thinking out of the box here, have you tried feeding her ?

Surely if Poss is feeding her it'll make her puke, not poo?

Thanks SM. She is eight months now.

Funny, I was just thinking the other day that I must try my carrot pasta sauce on her :)

It started when solids were introduced to her diet. I removed them again but the problem continued so slowly introduced them again. Working on giving her loads of boiled water but without sitting on her and stuffing a hose down her throat its hard to get her to drink it.
