Good Holiday Read Wanted

Post by Spike » 30th Jun, '12, 10:39

I'm off to Bali in a week's time to refresh, relax, contemplate my navel and think about life, the universe and everything. In between contemplating my navel, eating, drinking and getting sun burned I like a good read. I tend to read either biographies or action thrillers while on holiday. Anyone read a good book lately they would recommend?

There is a new (ish) Tom Clancy book out - 'Locked On' - not sure if you find Clancy books to be relaxing though. For me, I like them, but they can be pretty involved. Haven't started 'Locked On' yet.

I read Patricia Cornwell's 'Port Mortuary' over the past couple of weeks on holiday and started the one that follows called, 'Red Mist.' They are part of the Kay Scarpetta series and are pretty good mystery/thriller books. If you haven't read any of the Scarpetta series, you might want to go to the early books first.

Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels are good, easy reads as well - also decent mystery/thriller books with a gratitious amount of butt-kicking thrown in :D

Just looked at the Tom Clancy novels, wondered when he'd get back to writing. Seems to have a co-author on his later stuff.

Very little of his stuff is on Kindle. Wonder why?

I'm halfway through Andre Agassi's autobiography. Enjoyable read.

Depends - do you like deep and pithy, or light and entertaining?

Just finished Shatner's Up Till Now, which was easy to read and a good travel book; also just finished the Sam Walton (Mr. WalMart) autobio which was in its own way inspiring.

Am now knee deep into Mark Twain's ponderous A Connecticut Yankee In King Aurthur's Court, and two rockumentaries - The Bill Bruford autobio which is self indulgent and florid, and Rick Wakeman's Futher Adventures of A Grumpy Old Rock Star, which I'm really enjoying.

Crime Thriller:
Jo Nesbo - Harry Hole. Apparently avoid HeadHunter, not HH character, and my bookshop lady refused to sell it to me yesterday because she said it's not good.
Michael Robotham-really enjoyed his first and think third ones.
Not read Michael Connelly, but same bookseller said these ones are very good and going to order in earlier one in series if I wished. (Book shop sells to many travelling gents, knows her clients)

In his defense, Bill Bruford's drumming is a bit self indulgent and florid, but I think his work on the 80s King Crimson lineup is outstanding. The Rick Wakeman book sounds funny, his whole wizard thing is the saddest rock cliche until you get a load of Chris Squire's fricken octuple-necked bass penile-extension guitar.

Has anyone read the Keith Richards biography? I'm almost scared to  but could make for a great holiday read!

Good reminder Kieth, feel same, but after being surpised at liking the Agassi bio, agree might be worth a holdiay risk.

Thanks all for the recommendations. I'll have a wander round the bookstore at the terminal on Friday and see which of the recommendations takes my fancy.

Hehe...thanks Duck. The Bible, I do like a good work of fiction but it's a bit of a heavy read for a relaxing holiday. I'll take a look at the other one.

I've made myself a promise to read War and Peace - damn I am struggling to get past 50 pages. I have done it 3 times but gave up but alas now I have made a commitment to see it through

I would strongly recommend "Into thin air" from Kooky's flowchart

Love the flowchart, may take a bit of a meander around that :)

On the subject of Shades of Grey - has anyone read it ? I hadn't heard about it until the other day...but at lunch yesterday there were several ladies admitting to reading it !

I'd be interested to hear if Shades of Grey is worth perusing too...?
It seems to be the book of choice amongst the masses at the moment...
