Question/Suggestion

Post by Kooky » 29th Jun, '08, 09:09

In light of the increasing number of Porummers in Australia, would it be beneficial to have a dedicated Oz forum?

Maybe split the Down Your Way forum into countries or continents? skank, joy and choc might like their own Septic Tank. :)

I know most of you aren't in the slightest bit interested in the fact that Din Tai Fung has just opened in Sydney, so not sure where to post it for the benefit of Sydneysiders who may be.

Just cos you were shopping at MY supermarket! [smilie=tease.gif]

In all seriousness, then it's a good idea. Was the password-protected suggestion a serious one? If so, why should it only be open to certain users?

Presumably because only those with weird shaped heads or awaiting realignment would be intereseted in what's in there.... [smilie=cul.gif]

If you want to go and have you private conversations, go ahead and have them. Rarely look at the Down Your Way forum anyhow, IT's usually Burb telling us what fish he's having this week or some other inciteful piece of tedium. So [smilie=tease.gif]

Random thought... What is the Singaporum? Is it a forum for:
  • expats currently in Singapore; or
  • non-Singaporeans who are, have been, or will be, living or staying in Singapore but not working; or
  • people who live in Singapore but who don't have PR; or
  • non-Singaporeans who are, have been, or will be, working in Singapore, or who are partnered to someone who falls into one of those groups; or
  • all of the above; or
  • something else entirely;
  • etc, etc ad nauseum
...or is this a forum for people who have more than a passing connection to Singapore in one of those or some other way, but who are mainly here to support and enjoy the (virtual) company of the people, and contribute to the discussions that can be found here?

One thing the site may be missing is an 'about us' type of page, which could help to define or explain how this board came to be, what it's purpose and/or aim is, and who can be found here. It might attract more like-minded people, by helping people who find this forum decide whether they want to participate or move on.

I think we'll create a new section called Down Your Way. In there we can have Australia, US & UK subforums for now and see how it pans out. It's a good idea to get those Angry Board type posts about peoples new host countries away from the general forums. Not that all posts are angry board type rants, but they are becoming more prevalent.

As for an About Us page, we had commissioned a world renowned wordsmith to rewrite the FAQ section we have a link to at the top to include the about us and history type stuff. That hasn't eventuated so if anyone would like to volunteer to rewrite/create a new FAQ section, please let me know.

Although my influence and power is great, I don't think it's that strong.

The question I'm raising is more about creating a identity - if that's the right word - for the forum, and possibly attracting some more 'quality' members (before anyone reads this in a way that I didn't intend it to sound and gets upset, be assured that I think you're all 'quality' members). I notice that after the initial surge, membership numbers have remained reasonably static. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm sure the aim of the forum isn't necessarily to increase raw membership numbers.

But, is there an aim? Should it be stated somewhere? I'm not saying we should get carried away and start writing mission statements or setting performance indicators.

Like I said, random thought. I appreciate your answer K, but I'm sure that, as one of the top contributors to this and the previous forum, you would have some thoughts on the direction you might like to see it move in.

Of course I do. :) I did re. the other place but I didn't own that one either so it wasn't my decision, and I couldn't get much support to beef it up with useful information (and those that tried with me know I valued theirs) so I just went with the flow.

It's essentially a chat room and most members seem happy to keep it that way. Personally I think the fact that it's based in Singapore is not very relevant, as much of the chat is universal.

As long as everything appears in the today's (active) posts page I don't mind what the forum structure is. I only have to bugger about with it when I want to start a topic.
