Poached Chicken and Couscous

Post by Bender » 31st Aug, '09, 11:44

You've probably heard about how it's possible to cook fish in a dishwasher, which I haven't tried because I'm allergic to seafood (I'd imagine you shouldn't use detergent when cooking in the machine), but have you heard of cooking chicken in a coffee maker? It is possible! This link tells you how to do it.

Here's an abridged version of the recipe:

Ingredients:
  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts (tenders are smaller and cook faster)
  • 1-2 pats butter or margarine
  • about 1/2 cup couscous
  • Water
  • Seasonings (herb/spice blend)
Method:
  1. Measure out about a centimetre of water in the carafe and dump it in the coffee maker’s reservoir. Then stick your chicken and butter in the carafe and douse it with seasoning. Place the carafe on the warming plate and switch the coffeemaker on.
  2. When the water has heated and flowed into the carafe, adjust the quantity. Try to get the water to cover a bit less than half the chicken. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring once so the butter mixes in with the poaching liquid.
  3. Turn the chicken over and cook for another 15 minutes, then remove from the carafe.
  4. It’s time to prep your side dish. This recipe uses couscous but you could also use instant mashed potato. Taste your liquid, and if it needs more seasoning, adjust it. Dump in couscous in a 1:1 ratio with the liquid. Be careful not to put in more couscous than liquid or it’ll end up crunchy. Put the couscous-filled carafe back on the burner and let it sit for about five minutes or until the liquid’s all absorbed.
  5. Plate it up and serve with wine.

Maybe, but where's the fun in that?

given how chicken is generally disease ridden and the water temperature in coffee makers usually not even at boiling point, i would not try this if they paid me.

Mmmmmm, slow roasted flavor with just a hint of salmonella.

Well, we all know not to eat the yellow snow. In Thailand I'll take this as a similar warning. :D
