Happy Pancake Day

Post by Fat Bob » 8th Mar, '11, 08:10

Today is Shrove Tuesday, and the tradition in the UK was to have pancakes at one of the meals today (originally the use up of all the foodstuffs before Lent - by this time in winter then all that left is a few eggs, milk and some flour. But I says balls to all that religious mumbo jumbo!)

So what's you're favourite pancake filling? I'm stuck between a spoonful of sugar with an orange squeezed over one and chocolate sauce spread on one.

Oh, and we're talking wafer thin crepes.

Oooooooo.....there's an indian near work that does dosas!

Now pancake day, this is one I can celebrate! Might have to be inspired and cook for dinner tonight.

Fave Filling: Banana in thick slices, lightly caramalised in butter and brown sugar, with a few dollops or rasberry jam over it. I'm also a think crepe style pancake girl - for some reason in our house they were called fritters.

I make them thin but not wafer thin, just over the width of a bubble. Chopped walnuts into the mix, then folded over, filled with vanilla-seasoned hand-whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries.

Pre-Mrs. S, it's what I used to cook when I had entertained a lady the night before, before we either went our separate ways or spent the rest of the weekend together. Mrs. S doesn't care for them, too sweet.

So you used to entice women back to your place with a promise of pancakes in the morning?

When I hear pancakes I can only think of the classic American diner style stack of flapjacks with butter and 100% maple syrup. Black coffee and a side of crispy bacon optional.

I'm surprised. Soon you'll start believing in Creationism.

Almond meal works too. I'm not sure if egg substitute tastes good but I found this: http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/in ... 856AAM0FCi

Neo is the king of pancake making, I will give him these details :)

I miss omelettes too. Most of you know I'm really slack when it comes to my food intolerances (because I'm a glutton :D ) but I really can't take eggs in anything other than minute quantities.

Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day has no religious significance at all. Ash Wednesday has, but we're not celebrating that.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent (Ash Wednesday) starts.

How is not a religous event ?

Is Christmas Eve a religious event? Does the fact that the existence of a non religious day is defined by the existence of a religious one mean that it is itself religious? Should the day before my birthday be religious to anyone who feels like worshiping me?

Ent and Ash Wednesday are the religious events. Pancake day is not, there's not religious ceremony especially for the day, so it can't be religious.

That's like saying getting pissed on Xmas eve is a religious celebration!

Pedantics. Shrove Tuesday is triggered by a religous event. ergo, without the religous event Shrove Tuesday wouldn't exist.

Shrove Tuesday exists because of religion.

Creationists the lot of you.
