Question for Fresh Mint
Hey FM! I think you are South African based on your support for the Boks. So want to know is the term "Saffa" for a South African offensive or not? I hear it said a lot but wonder if it is acceptable to say or not cool. Thanks.

Re: Question for Fresh Mint
almost sounds like a derivative from 'kaffer', which in all ways is not a cool term.

Re: Question for Fresh Mint
Why not avoid the problem and simply refer to them as "obnoxious Yarpie b*stards"?

Re: Question for Fresh Mint
I called the resident SA guy in the office an obnoxious Yarpie b*stard just now. He is wondering why I am being so nice to him today. The obnoxious Yarpie b*stard.
If there was a God, then why is my arse the perfect height for kicking?

All right, I admit it is only vindication from Snaffled. But it's still vindication...

It's a rare occassion: both me being right and someone actually agreeing with it!

Re: Question for Fresh Mint
Yeah, I'm a Zimbo, not a Saffer -- despite my support for the Boks, but that has a historical basis.
"Saffer" is not remotely derogatory though.
"Jaapie" is a bit more tricky. In the past it used to refer specifically to working class, Afrikaans speaking, white South Africans and was considered derogatory, but these days foreigners tend to call all (white) South Africans "Jaapies", and they in turn have embraced the word and use it themselves as well with a measure of self-deprecating pride a bit like "nigger" in the U.S.

Re: Question for Fresh Mint
Thanks FM. That's great. I have a few South African friends and I wasn't sure to refer to them as Saffers socially and if it was in the same sentiment as a Kiwi or Ozzie.Fresh Mint wrote:Yeah, I'm a Zimbo, not a Saffer -- despite my support for the Boks, but that has a historical basis.
