Just evil, IMHO, and he'll see his loss of freedom as his contribution to the cause.

He reckons he's campaigning against his country being overrun by foreigners and Islam. His answer, the cowardly slaughter of young people of his own kind. That has to be the act of a lunatic with an incredibly warped mind and he needs to be permanently locked up.

Evil and insane. Not a good combination.

I don't think they should have appeased a violent and insane criminal with the audience he so desperately desired. I understand from the article that they conceded because it was the only way he'd agree to give evidence. I would have told him to go f uck himself. They had all the evidence they needed.

Very good point, Lili. I'm sure he sees himself as a martyr - hmmm, not much different from Islamic terrorists really is he?

This.

At least they made the decision not to broadcast his evidence (manifesto).

Seems the verdict is bad rather than mad...

Edit : Hmmm, 21 years for murdering 77 people. Surely, he won't see the outside world again ?

He's 33 now. Even if he serves the full 21 years, he'll be able to leave prison when he's 54 years old.

This is an obvious case where the death penalty would be very useful.

edit - he's actually got the longest possible sentence in the Norwegian prison system (wiki quote): "He was sentenced to containment (a special form of a prison sentence) with a time frame of 21 years and a minimum time of 10 years, with the possibility of extension for as long as he is deemed a danger to society. This is the maximum penalty in Norway. Breivik announced that he accepts the sentence and will not appeal"

Surely they will keep extending him as long as he lives. One would hope.

I've spoken to a couple of Norwegians about this and apparently it's well understood that he'll serve the 21 years and then have it extended further and die in prison. At least that's how it would work in today's system and things would have to change a lot for him to be released.

He's clearly sane, judging by the intricate planning and preparations. Like any murderer, his motives were not aligned with society.
