Had to happen. Gillards inability to get her message out there was always going to destroy the ALP.

If only the Libs would ditch Abbot.

It's too frustrating for words!
Just wish Windsor and Oakshott had stuck to their word and withdrawn support. Guess they dislike Abbott even more. Can I leave country until September...

It was big news in Cairns last night. I think they postponed the start of the State of Origin game - either that or we drank quicker than I thought we would!

Great 2 days - Gillard is out and DOMA is down... Nice 48 hours.

Gillard was terrible at getting her message out - she actually achieved more than she will ever be accredited for. Out of all of this - as a fan of Game of Thrones - I am sure Julia Gillard could appreciate a fan calling Anthony Albanese - Tyrion Lannister.... The ultimate middle man, the deal maker and non threatening person who is never there hero, however just sits on the side and makes things happen.

J27, you have just proved what an idiot you are. The characters in the Game of Thrones that do that are the middlemen are Littlefinger and Varys. Tyrion is a rogue, is someone you should dislike because of his physicality but like because he's probably the most human of the Lannisters.

Calling any politician even partly human is just idiotic.

Here's a big F**k you for the idiot call but he is my favorite character... his cunning and sense of self and his surroundings are awesome... in the most diabolical of circumstances - he stands tall despite his midget self... so I do accept a slap at comparing a low life politician to such a character but the way Albo managed to straddle both sides of the fence and still come out as deputy is pretty impressive

And nice to see today in Rudd's speech that he didn't back away from still supporting same sex marriage. Maybe if Gillard had stood up on more than one occasion to fight for what she believed in - she would have been a great PM. Her spontaneous 'that man' speech was awesome - the rest pandered to focus groups. I would pick a late October ballot - and Abbott had better start polishes everyone of those turds his been hiding behind Gillard's incompetent message delivery service

The problem is J27 that you actually have been completely sucked into a popular surface, media driven interpretation of this man Rudd. If you read a little more widely and talked to people in the industry of politics you'd have some sense that Julia Gillard had far more back bone behind the scenes, integrity and a capacity to negotiate, which requires compromise, than Rudd a known abusive bully who wobbles to jelly and completely disorganised and incoherent once the camera is off him. This whole debacle is it great case study of why a popular vote for a presidential style of government should never see the light of day.

BTW FB has it right, your interpretation and analysis of applying character analysis from GofT is completely off.

I wasn't saying that about Rudd - Rudd has been a complete self absorbed wrecking machine - I was saying it about Anthony Albanese - because somehow he managed to become deputy leader through this entire saga, that isn't an easy thing to do.

Julia Gillard managed to get a lot of legislation through - in that regard she was effective however she was a terrible communicator. I read alot - talk alot and my comments arent based on the herald sun level of discourse. Are you seriously suggesting she was a good leader?

I find your argument strange - yes Rudd has major issues but if they went to an election as planned by Gillard they would have been slaughtered... Abbott will most likely still win convincingly however he will now have to stand up and declare his plans... for the past 6 months he has been given a free pass and just laid low. That is surely a good thing for democracy?

Oh and though I appreciate Gillard giving way on so many issues she did believe in to get through legislation that makes a difference such as gonski and the disability scheme - she nonetheless traded her credibility. She was PM however she always acted as though she was held back by something. So we only got to see the real her - the one people would have liked on a few occasions; the rest of the time we had the disingenuous opportunist disowning her roots. Now we have Rudd again for a few months because she was a terrible leader and a bad communicator. [smilie=cul.gif]

I do have comprehension skill, I knew you were talking about Anthony Albanese, and agree still with Bob your interpretative comparison is incorrect. We have differing views on what real backbone and leadership is, and I don't think it is about media sound bites.

I'm hoping Rudd gains enough ground in the polls for the Libs to get spooked, dump Abbott and give us someone I can vote for without compromising my own ethical standards

Who would be the potential contenders for the mad monk's role ? And if the Rudd factor doesn't translate to the anticipated gains, he'll likely be dumped as well so potentially clear out of two equally unappealing leaders.

Amen to that.

Tas - I think leadership incorporates skills that both Rudd and Gillard have in abundance in some areas and a distinct lack of in others. Gillard was an effective negotiator back end, she got stuff done but a part of leadership is managing the expectations of those who pay your salary; regardless whether you are a CEO or a PM. The electorate stopped listening - you can blame the media, you can blame Rudd but she was the leader - it was her job as the PRIME Minister to manage this process. She sucked it at

Explain how she could have stopped the white anting and the leaks in the last election. Rudd held the party to Ransom, and was rewarded. Lowest common denominator public a and media reporting played its part.

Once the leaks were out there was little she could do - and after the election, the carbon tax she promised she would pursue was forced on her. Instead of spelling it out, instead of looking into a camera and saying why they thought it preferable to stay in power and work out a day on carbon tax, they ignored the issue and sh*t on the electorate.

I was so hopeful time after time but everytime she botched the message - save the one time she was genuine. Maybe she was right about the 457 visa issue because that english guy advising her is a complete twit.

Today in the Brisbane Mall

And that is why Kevin Rudd will be re-re-re-elected PM in a few months.

Yeah but he doesn't come to Brisbane during the state of origin week and ignore it and go watch you AFL team play the lions. WTF! Julia just had no clue how to relate to northerners.

Politics is a popularity contest so you need to work the crowd and he definitely knows how to do that. Bob Hawke was very good at it too.

Well he doesn't win me over, I think he is a creep, the only thing he has going for him is that he is not as creepy as his opposition.

I think that statement captures how most people here think. If Turnbull got the nod, this election would be landslide... instead it will probably be quite close with one ineffective leader of questionable character and competence and one (yet to be seen) unelectable opposition leader.. Fun and games

As far as I can tell, for Rudd to win he needs the Australian electorate to see the ALP of being able to offer an effective plan into the future. They are on the way to doing this - though Rudd should stop being so public and focus or at least demonstrate that he is focusing on a plan. If he sells that message - the ALP can win. Oh that is unless the libs do a 1983 in reverse and throw Turnbull into the mix.
