Reporting from the Green Machine

Post by Tas » 14th Nov, '12, 11:00

I'm catching up on weeks (months??) of ironing - thus I am making use of the $3.50 DVD dispenser up the road to help me get through it. It.is.a.mission

So thought I might do a few reports on the viewing, some older, some recentish releases

1. Promethius
Reported already, bloody awful don't ever be tempted even as a time filler

2. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The older English actors show us how it should be done. Really good portrayal of one city in India and their reactions. Thoroughly enjoyed. Not too heavy not too light. Moderately predictable, but well done. Good timing to remind that we can begin to live our lives how we really want at any point we really decide to.

3. Friends with Kids
Surprised enjoyed it more than had expected to, had borrowed from curiousity. The established comedians were pretty good. Wiig had surprisingly little to do. Think the lead woman, despite writing for herself as a vehicle, was not the best choice of actress, but the remaining support cast did well. Some pretty realistic but amusing dialogue. Fairly predictable in number of areas, but again thought did ok job of it. Would cast in chick flick category, but if you're a bloke with your arm being pulled hard, one of the better ones.

4. Rock of Ages
I thought might find watchable in the same way I coped with Mama Mia thingie, and I liked the music genre for loud fun. OMG, what the fuck was I thinking. Fucking awful, don't, just don't. And strangely made me appreciate the originals of the music more. Like the worst ever episode of Glee you can possibly imagine. Take heed of the warnings in the earlier movie reviews on here.

5. Snow White & The Huntsman
I was pleasantly surprised. I actually quite enjoyed watching this. I thought the backstory perspective for the evil queen was very well done. Enjoyed special effects, particularly some of the castle fights (as a reader of fantasy fiction revolving around fights scenes of that ilk, thought quite well captured). The queen definitely stole the scenes, and I thought the dwarves were well cast and also thought their physicality was well handled. Snow white didn't have too many scenes to dominate by that actress (I'll never understand how they get Kristen Stewart to look fairly beautiful in films but she looks so rough in real life)

...to be continued, the baskets loading is only 2/3 done

Me too. Nothing revolutionary but great ensemble casting.

I loved the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel also. Perhaps because I too am getting up there in years. We stayed in the hotel (not the one that was the Marigold Hotel) they filmed from in Udaipur. The one that overlooked the lake with the castle in the middle of it.
I guess we're not in Kansas anymore.

Looks like Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is one movie we've all seen and can agree on! :D
A woman walked into a pub and asked the barman for a double entendre. So he gave it to her.

That's because it was a great film!

Loved it - nice film and a great way to spend on evening. Also watch Rock of Age and managed 20 minutes before it become just too hard tolerate. Worst damn film in a long time - that said I haven't seen Promethius based on the feedback by everyone.

I did watch the Sweeney - I used to watch the TV show but kinda forgot about it, the film was fun to watch.

I watched Savages and well it is hit and miss - I did enjoy parts of it but the violence was a little over the top... though given the violence in Mexico perhaps it was on the money. I also watched Cockney's versus Zombies - not much fun....

I don't see much at the cinema anymore - it just seems that TV has gotten so much better... Dexter Season 7, Boardwalk Empire Season 3, Homeland, Family Guy - too much entertainment not enough bloody time

6. Ted. Had seen enough shorts previously that took the bait as new release at my Green Machine. Silly, dumb, some sweary beary stuff gratuitous that fell flat. But. I big laughed, out loud several times.

...Several of you would hate it. But Flash Gordon fans might get some funnies from it.

7. Magic Mike
I'm in a phase of nothing to heavy I suspect. It does what it says on the box, don't expect too much. I enjoyed watching it, watched all the extra extended 'dance' scenes, and re-watched a couple of the Tatum O'Neal sequences. Predictabley, Mathew McConaughey was built to play a sleazy strip show presenter and yes, his body is tight, and O'Neal, well, I enjoyed watching his moves. This is not a blokes movie - but you might want to set the missus up with a couple champagnes and this flick, go out do manly things then come home ;)

Having just watched the DVD, did have a little chuckle at Mathew Mc best supporting actor notation from the 35 New York critics including Magic Mike amongst all the more serious stuff :) http://m.smh.com.au/entertainment/movie ... 2as5v.html

Just watched Hope Springs, 2 days in New York, the new Bourne film and Looper. Hope Springs would seemingly be better position with an over 60 demogaphic. 2 Days in New York had its moments. I liked the Bourne film that not as much as the Matt Damon ones and Looper was cool. A good concept, great execution and fun to watch

Has anyone watched The Sweeney? British movie showing up on the new rental list, anyone know if worth the effort? Some actors like in it, always rather liked British crime flicks/tv

Yes worth watching - a bit different from the TV series but still good stuff... better than blowing your night watching superman (yes I did)

YAY! it's my Netflix disc at the moment and given that it may rain most of the weekend and I probably will also have ironing I think I will watch it :)
Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.

Don't bother, should have gone straight to Oprah TV channel.

Beautiful Creatures
Enjoyed it. Aimed at younger demographic, but some fun writing. I laughed. Thought the young male lead really carried it along. Final climatic scenes a bit disappointing, but still thought ending neatly done.

Yep, with Clint Eastwood not in best form, Justin Timberlake with squeaky voice, and Amy Adams who was quite good but with a very mussed up script to work from.
