Purple potatoes?

Post by slinky » 2nd Sep, '08, 17:49

I'm seeing purple potatoes in the stores now. Anyone know anything about them? What's the point?

Are they just red skinned, or purple all the way through?
A woman walked into a pub and asked the barman for a double entendre. So he gave it to her.

They are not even remotely red - they are a deep purple, much like an eggplant. No idea if they are purple inside. The label on them calls them 'purple potatoes.'

Nope. Not beets. They look just like regular potatoes except they are a deep purple color. It's bizarre. I might have to buy some just to see what the heck they are!

Snowy mountains, shark bay, big sandy desert, Big Wet, purple potatoes...

More common than you think. It's just the skin. If they're sort of long and thin they make great chips.

"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

Do they taste any different than regular potatoes? (If not, what's the point?)

If you go to South America there are about 500 hundred varieties of potato or something. There's probably a potato of every colour.

There is according to K's link. Apparently the purple ones were saved for the Inca kings.

It's just not something I've seen before and noticed them in 2 different stores this week. Maybe I'll give 'em a try sometime.

So we can do a "Climatologist Causation"

Inca kings ate purple potatoes.
All Inca kings are dead.
Ergo: Purple potatoes are lethal.

I think that the most common carrot colour was NOT orange but something else (it's purple - i checked it up). People selected the orange colour because they liked it and now it is the predominant colour for carrots.

I'm sure the purple colour would serve some use in its lifecycle. - can't be for nothing.

Purple Potatoes are readily available here in NY. Thy are originally from Peru and are naturally that color. When I served them a while back to my very German father he got upset. Why are they purple? Did you dye them? They are funny. Why did you not buy normal potatoes...

Do they taste any different. Hmn... Maybe a little but quite frankly they do not deserve the exorbitant price you pay for them here...
