How good is a Wii?

Post by Burbage » 7th Apr, '09, 12:39

So, from accumulated golf prizes I have $200 to spend in a local Sydney H Turner. Having no need of anything in particular I thought I could put it towards a Wii. But beyond the golf games, which is the main selling point for it I see, what else should I consider?

I personally like it. It's got a different slant to games than other consoles. If you play other consoles of games on your pc, and you fnd yourself dodging bullets/bombs or swerving when in car games, then the Wii take this one step further, where your body movements count for something.

Only really played tennis, mario kart and guiter hero on it, all very good. I'm sure there's hundreds more, waiting for the snowboarding one myself which should be a laugh.

It's very good in a party atmosphere. Also by yourself if you are that way inclined.

The extras don't always come cheap (steering wheels, golf club, tennis racket etc)

what about the picture quality, FB, any good?

if i would buy a console it would be a Wii, given that the other ones are much of a muchness with a PC and i much prefer a mouse and keyboard for gaming.

Picture quality? No, it's no good. If you want state of the art picture and sound you don't buy a Wii. If you want a different gaming concept to the traditional console platform, that will be great at parties or when friends visit (but otherwise bordering on a novelty that will wear out fast), buy a Wii!!

I've played one for a while and it was fun, but nothing that could draw me away from Killzone 2 on PS3. :)

I'm beginning to hear rumblings that the next Tiger Woods golf for the Wii is going to make even better use of the controller. And a golf simulator is the whole reason for getting it. You need to swing a club, not flick a mouse.

As for graphics, from what I can see they are perfectly adequate. Graphics have never made the game. They are merely an enhancement. Some of the greatest games ever made had rubbish graphics by today's standards, but they are still great games.

Lets face it, the Wii is targetting casual gamers. What you consider adequate, I consider sub-par. Nintendo did a very smart thing with the Wii, which was not focus on hardware capability, but deliver a party-friendly gaming concept. Something MS and Sony completely overlooked in their race to deliver the most technically superior gaming platform. Given what the Wii is capable of, it is waaaay over priced, but yet it's still outselling everything else. It's like a PS2 with a newer UI and fancy controllers.

The latest next-gen games (for which there are only a few) are in a totally different league to anything that's ever been done before. It's not just about state of the art graphics, but effects and realism that are so detailed it's mind blowing. The word "great" with this games just doesn't do them justice. The effects are much, much more than an enhacement. They help to totally immerse you in a gaming experience. Just like the Wii does, but in a different way.

So yes, there may be old games with adequate graphics that "were" great games in their day, but would you still want to play them now given what else is available? I certainly wouldn't. Hence why the Wii doesn't appeal to me at all, other than a party novelty.

Wii did some things right, like built in wireless lan.

They did some things wrong, like no physical ethernet port and no HDMI connection.

I have the Wii and PS3. When we want to game, we PS3, when we want to have fun, normally with friends and after drinking, it's the Wii

Easily the best FPS ever made. Graphics and sound effects are really stunning. Multiplayer is frantic bloody carnage at it's finest!

I play it regularly on my 50" plasma :)

The only selling point of the Wii is the controller. Which of course is the whole point and the next generation of consoles will use motion detecting controllers, and improve on it.

As for graphics they may be amazing but realistic is going a bit far. They're still two dimensional for a start, so let's get rid of the hyperbole. The graphics of today will look just as dated in twenty years' time as the wireframe vector graphics of the 80s. Realism only goes so far as well. After all you are still in your home, you are still pushing buttons on a keyboard, not pulling a trigger on a heavy steel rifle.

Everything requires a suspension of disbelief, and the place where that suspension of disbelief happens is merely a matter for the individual to decide. If I want to believe that wire frame vector graphics ae real then they are real. No matter how good or crap they are. It's your imagination that does the rest. Theatre has known this for millenia.

I do still play Elite. Not just through nostalgia, but also because it is a unique and never equalled game. I'd play Lords of Midnight too if I could find a work C64. And of course, graphics mean nothing to a lot of games, like Tetris and Scrabble.

Baloo, do you play the golf game much? Have you triedthe Tiger Woods golf on the Wii? This would be the only reason for me to buy it. As the cheapest available computer golf simulator.

Just played the Wii Sports version of the gold. Not Tigger.

It's ok in that a fairly basic gold swing action will produce a shot on the wii. It certainly wont tell you if your setup is wrong. I doubt it would impove your game at all either.

Maybe I'll wait for the reviews of the next Tigger game. Apparently it's doing a lot of work on the controls.

In fact realism is me playing computer golf and scoring the same way I do on a real course. Or, in an fps, getting knocked out of the action when hit by one bullet. Don't know that computer game designers actually aim for realism.

My PS3 is currently a brick as far as games/DVDs are concerned thanks to a Sony firmware update. Will download the next one this month to memory stick and hope it fixes it

Killzone 2 - a head-shot to any class from any weapon results in instant-kill. Actually most FPS have done headshot kills for a while now, it's nothing new.

Rosbif71 i think you're having wishful thinking if you're hoping another update will fix a bricked PS3. Most likely you need to drop it in to Sony for service call, or at least call them. The latest update came out failry recently (last week I think).

There's an ultimate FPS available that's not Halo? Bugger, time to buy the PS3 then, as I already have a Wii and a XBox360...... :D

Burb, I think a Wii will be fun in your house. There's times in my house where neither systems get turned on for a while. I then find a new game of feel a need to attempt Medal of Honour or Halo again in order to see if I can get all the way through without being shot. And fail.

I personally think all of the consoles and the games are over priced. However, in this consumer market, I have the cash so I can afford. Luckily I look serious enough to the vendors at the various shops that they push kids out of the way so I can get a good demo.

So how much is a PS3?

Most likely failed lens, which is pretty common problem (although strange that a firmware update caused it). Chill out and contact Sony for service. If it's under warranty you should be ok.

If everything works but disc reads then technically it's not bricked :)
