Nope 2 years... pay attention!

Get a PS3... problem solved!

Is PS3 multi-region for DVDs? OK with buying US-only Blurays.

I'll stick with my prediction. Blu Ray will certainly be dead in four years.

It may well have been replaced in less than two. You can guarantee several companies are working on it. Particularly those who lost out to BluRay in the HDDVD scuffle. We'll probably know within two years what's coming next.

probably not right now, actually. the recession and subsequent losses accross the industry have cut heavily in R&D funding. i'm predicting pratically all nextgen R&D will be on the backburner for the next year or so.

Blu-ray will not be dead in four years... it's still growing now.

That might be true of development, but first to market with innovation will still be a priority.

Well, le's wait and se eh. You don't lose anything by not buying BluRay right now, since one thing is guaranteed, if the BluRay format is still with us in four years time then the players and disk will be a fraction of their current cost. So you win either way.

At the moment I have no intention of investing in BD media. I have the PS3 that can play them but for me it's more a matter of time. The only watching we do these days is kids shows and they don't need the enhanced quality. When the house settles down to the point movie watching is available, I'll see what's out there.

To be honest, the convenience & speed of downloaded videos makes buying the physical media difficult. Though if they released Disney's The Jungle Book on BD I would have to get it just to add to the collection I have.
So…if you wish to wish a wish, you may swish for fish with my Ish wish dish.

Except that when you finally do go Blu-ray in 4 years time, you will have missed out on 4 years of beautiful HD movies. And Morro in your case, you still wont have seen Blade Runner Final Cut on Blu-ray :)

It's the same argument with any new tech.. pay more now and enjoy the new, or wait years until it's cheap and miss out on the enjoyment of having it now. I paid a fortune for my 50" plasma when it was released and now they are dirt cheap by comparison. But given the chance again, I would have done it exactly the same.

I saw Blade Runner original and Director's cut in the cinema, so I'm not missing anything, in fact the video quality of a movie is probably the least important aspect of a movie for me. Story, acting, directing and pace all come first. Bluray and DVD are absolutely identical technologies as far as these priorities are concerned, and DVD wins due to price :)

true, same with the plasma we bought in Sing back in early 2004... that money would buy us two 50" inch now.

[edit: make that 3  ]

hey... that means it's over 5 years old now... [smilie=stupido.gif]

Then this whole argument is irrelevant for you seeing as you don't care that much about quality. As I already said in one of my earlier posts, Blu-ray is not for you.

But I find it amusing that you can make such comments without even seeing it to judge for yourself. Seriously...

The work they did on Blade Runner final cut was astounding and only Blu-ray can do it justice. This is not the original or Director's cut... this is the definitive Blade Runner version.

There is no question in my mind that BluRay is fine quality. The problem is whether or not it is a dud.

Jedi, as much as I like to bash Burb, you are making an arse out of yourself. If the only reason to buy bluray (is that blur-ay) is because of the NEXT version of Blade Runner then really, you are buying it just because you can. Apple people buy Apple products. You've bought HOW many versions of the same movie?!?!?!

Now, go back to telling me about how good the FPS is on PS3......

It's one example. The original blade runner on DVD and final cut on Blu-ray aren't even close to being the same movie. sigh.... obviously this point just isn't getting through.

Final cut on DVD is the same movie though. Same story, same acting, same directing, same pace, same editing.

It's not the same format. To some people (not you), that makes a difference.

Comparing DVD to blu-ray is like comparing VHS to DVD.

It makes a small difference to less than 1% of all movies ever made. The difference between VHS and DVD is vastly greater. The transition from analogue to digital and from tape to disk for a start. There is no such difference between BluRay and DVD, they are both disks, they are both digital, they are both equally convenient to use.

The technology that takes over from DVD is going to get rid of the disk.

I've said all this before and this argument is going in circles. Neither of our opinions is going to change whether BluRay is a success or not. Only time will tell.

My comparison to VHS was soley based on picture & audio quality. I agree this is going to in circles and I have nothing more to add to this. I am glad that I have Blu-ray capability in my home theatre and I will enjoy it until something better comes along.
