Yeah, been following this. Aiming for netbooks is smart as is their comment that today's predominant OS was engineered at a time when the internet was non-existent to the masses.
From what I can gather it's a UNIX kernel with the GUI being Chrome/Web based.
The major netbook makers have already said they'll make it available.

Got Linux on my netbook and it's incredibly user friendly. I likes it.

Hmmmm....I can see how this could work.
(a) Netbook manufacturers want a stripped down OS
(b) People want a lighter machine (use solid state hard drive)
(c) Mobile phone companies want you to hook up to the internet as much as you can
(d) Google docs
Though it'll still need an internet connection somehow, it's got promise.
Would I buy into it? dpends on the monthly costs of the phone bill!

They are initially aiming for the Netbook market. I guess anyone that bought a linux netbook would be buying the chrome version when it's released. It will probably bring more people over as the average punter would be less scared of Google than they are of Linux.
In saying that, Windows 7 is going to be a better choice for netbooks than the current XP (note, Vista is so crap and bloated that it's not being used for netbooks). MS are rumoured to be releasing a very light weight Windows 7 OS just for netbooks.
Add in the fact that MS are also rumoured to be releasing a "Home" licence where a user can install the same OS on 3 different machines and it might make it tougher for Google to get a foothold.
Who knows, it should be fun to watch from the sidelines.
