Ah, that's why buying from US online stores is key. I found 2 online stores that will sell to you no matter where you are. It enabled me to finally buy a copy of MS Money which is no longer sold outside of the US.

Just ignore it. After a while you won't notice it.Morrolan wrote:but then how do i disable the message that UAC is disabled?

Well, I'll run it for a while and see how it goes. I wonder if they've got hibernate working properly yet.
Re: Vista Home premium v Basic
It's a lot better in vista than XP, but still flaky sometimes.

If you think you know a way to disable Security Center from displaying alerts specifically for UAC being disabled, I'd really like to see that.
If you want to disable all Security Center alerts, that can be done from Security Center "Change the way Security Center alerts me" - set to the last option ("Don't notify me and don't display the icon"). But I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Re: Vista Home premium v Basic
Guess that will depend on what you use your computer for. If it's for internet surfing, downloading and general interconnectedness then you want your security up and running big time. Otherwise you can set up a firewall, give access to the programs that need it and close down the alerts. And, if you don't connect to the internet at all there's not much need for security except virus checking media.Jedi wrote:

I'm still grappling with the Account Management / Security Center thingy - had set WinAmp to run as Admin, but every time it starts there's two dialogue boxes for allowing the program to run, and sometime to shut down.
I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. Groucho Marx

Well, the new computer arrived. Ran the benchmark on World in Conflict. At medium settings it had a min frame rate of 80fps, where my previous setup (which was pretty state-of-the-art in 2004) managed about 6.
And that's with a cheap video card. So we can say that the new machine is worthwhile upgrade. It'll be interesting to see how it goes with video rendering.
Now vista. It's already annoyed me. But I haven't been in to see what I can switch off yet.

This is what I'm talking about, there's a lot of layers of bloat that an ex-XPer is unfamiliar with.

Re: Vista Home premium v Basic
I'll upgrade if necessary.
What I am noticing is that if you want to make use of the 64bit architecture there's going to be a lot of stuff that won't run on the new machine. It may not be as severe as the jump from 16bit to 32bit, but I think I'm going to have to accept that there's a price to pay for the new speed and memory availability.

Re: Vista Home premium v Basic
So to deal with stuff that doesn't run on 64-bit vista I upgraded my old computer.
Got an e8400 chip, motherboard and ram off ebay for $270. A new SATA hard and optical drive for $150 and al stuck into the old case. The 4670 video card I took out of the new machine when I upgraded it to the 4890 and Bingo. A virtually brand new decent spec computer.
All so that I can run Silent Hunter III.
Haha.
