*(oxymoron)
Ok, so I finally broke down and got a RAIDed 1tb disc set. Same day I got a 1tb RAIDed NAS.
So I'm trying to get my shareable stuff onto the NAS, and the more personal stuff on the big drive. Much of this has been manual. "Stuff" meaning files on my laptop and various external drives that have proliferated over time.
For iTunes, which I (still) used for ripping and podcast downloads, I want to move my music onto the NAS or the BD, but I don't want to have them always powered on. But iTunes AFAIK can't deal with multiple locations for files, so you always have to change the Preferences to point to a local disc or external one.
Any suggestions to have something like iTunes to rip global, download podcasts local, or to have a choice of locations for files without manually changing every time? Or is what I'm thinking totally bonkers.

Re: iTunes strategy
Not that I've tried this.....
I see in iTunes there is a "Add folder to library" option under "File"
I currently use this with "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding library" checked (Found in Edit->Preferences->Advanced"). This means that if I have files sitting on a thumb drive, I can plug it in, show iTunes it's there, and it copies the files across to the iTunes music folder. Rather handy I reckon.
Now then, what would happen if you unchecked the box? You'd still have your main ripping folder ("iTunes Media folder location" in Advanced preferences). But I reckon you would also have other folders that you added.
However, if you have the files on the NAS and don't always switch it on, it means you won't always be able to access the files. But that's obviously something you'll be thinking about when starting up iTunes.....

Re: iTunes strategy
Yeah, the folder and file options work on a once-a-time basis, and pulls the data in from there into wherever the repository is set in Advanced. The only workaround I know and I'm not about to start searching iTube fanboy sites to get answers, is to manually reset it.
I should just use something else to rip, and use iTunes for listening and podcasts.

If you don't check the "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder" checkbox, then when you add files, they will be left in their original location. The only change is that the details will be added to the iTunes library file (iTunes Music Library.xml). So as long as this file is on a permanently available drive then all should be OK
