Wireless Streaming to PS3

Finally connected my NAS to my wireless router again (see other thread earlier on but basically I just used a long ethernet cable and replaced the router) and was trying to stream a video from the NAS to my PS3 which I use as a video player. Worked fine until halfway through the video it started to get into a stop-n-go mode. The file was around 1,3 GB with 45min playing time. Now the big question is if the router didnt have the capacity or what else went wrong. No other device was using the router at that time.

I had this problem with streaming to my xbox. At wireless G it fell apart after 10-30 mins. Not tried it on a wireless N network. Supposedly I can but with a computer under the TV and my Xbox linked to the Hubstation ethernet point rather than the cable modem network, I can't be arsed to fiddle with all the wires.

Doing the maths you need at least 4Mbs for the whole network. I'm sitting less than 5m away from my Wireless N router and windows tells me I'm only getting 65Mbs, can you check yours at all?

Will see if I can check the transfer rate. Alternatively I could put an ethernet cable between the router and the PS3 which should solve the problem but then wireless would be geekier

Wires are the answer methinks. Try it wired, see if it drops out. If it doesn't, try it again wireless. If it does drop out, then you know that's the problem! See what you can do to improve wireless speed, but I reckon in cities the main problem is wireless over crowding and therefore you will never get full speed (I'm supposed to get 300Mbs, but only a 1/4 is possible).

Sounds more like a memory issue on the machine doing the playing, either the bus or a full buffer. If you can get access to these settings it might be worth tinkering with. What's an NAS?

Wireless is crappier. Always use wired ethernet if possible.

Agree with FB. If you want to stream video of a decent quality, run a wire.

"Geekier" is knowing when to use the right technology.

Nothing much I can do about the PS3 wifi capabilities so looks like it's another cable.. will give it a try tonight first

Do you have a spare router that you could bridge the PS3 to and the join the same network as the other router. My mac mini only has wireless b/g and streaming video was very prone to stopping. Once I connected the mac directly to a wireless N airport express it was ( usually) fine

I have a spare router but doubt it supports the N standard. Luckily the PS3 is not that far away from the main router so an ethernet cable will sit nicely on top of all the other cables running along the wall
