Not sure if this should be here or in the rant forum.

I bought an external 500Gb hard disk about 18months ago. It wasn't cheap because I wanted an ethernet port on it. Needless to say the hard disk inside has crashed. I called Seagate asking where I can get it repaired outside of warranty. Their answer......

"Don't know sir. We don't have a repair centre and if we did it would probably cost more than a new unit. Why don't you buy a new one ?"

To make things worse, they then offered data recovery services which would cost a fortune. I really can't believe that I can't pay to get the unit fixed !

that's shocking. and i always thought Seagate was one of the better ones... guess not.

hmm concerning, we have a seagate, how much to recover data exactly? (we have gobs of it on there)

Didn't get that far. Luckily I used the drive for backups so I had a copy of all the data that was there.

Now I've got a Netgear/Infrant readyNAS NV+ with 3x500Gb drive giving me a usably 1Tb of RAID 5 online storage.

Han technology, Suntec e-Life, sell the full range. Most other places stocking them insisted you buy them already populated with disks. I bought the empty casing and populated with disks myself.

Unfortunately repairing it usually means finding the parts from technology that is, in this case, 18 months old. HDD technology moves on quite quickly and yes, they are now "run until they break" items.

It now calls into question why people use HDD as a back -up unless they have a dual-back-up system. Unfortunately there is option once you get above 10GB really.

I wish you hadn't said that. I just bought a Seagate 320Gb FreeAgent Pro for backup and it seems to work OK at the moment.

HP have the same attitude to printers as you will have seen from my previous rants about HP, i.e. they have a "service centre" where you take your faulty printer to be told "you'll just have to buy another one". Some service centre.

I have a FreeAgent with 500GB and using it as a backup. Should I be worried?

I've used both Seagate and Maxtor, and I haven't had any particular problems with either. I think with any manufacturer you can get a dud, maybe that's what's happened here?

What is stored on the external is what is on your computer so nothing lost…well in my case.

The one I bought cost more than a new PC, but then again keeping my irreplacable data is more important to me than a new PC.

Check out MPC Club. While it's a forum dedicated to Video streaming, they review most of the SOHO NAS units that come out.
