Soundbar or not?

Post by Lichtgestalt » 4th Sep, '12, 00:41

Been thinking to kick out my 5.1 home theatre setup and replace it by a soundbar. I know the sound is not as great but then I haven't been watching much movies the last couple of years anyway and listening to music is mostly on my Ipad when running or travelling. THe Bose system sounds nice but haven't listened to anything else to compare it. Ipad stand or wifi streaming would be a must.

Any recommendations? Opinions?

Are we talking replacing a 5.1 "out of the box" set up, or replacing a recevier/amp and separate 5.1 speakers?

I have the latter. I think I would notice the difference and therefore replaced the amp/receiver. The amp/receiver links up to the network via wire (you may need a wireless bridge to help you out) which subsequently can be controlled from a ipad/ipod/iphone/android and receive music via airplay (so I know it works from itunes, unsure of direct from device but more than likely it can).

If the former, then the difference may not be as strong so you may get away if you replace an average/crap system with a highend (e.g. Bose) soundbar, for instance. I wouldn't replace an average/crap 5.1 out the box with a average/crap soundbar.

Currently I have a system with seperate speakers (Denon 3802 amp with Mordaunt Short speakers and MOnitor Audio sub). I know it will be a step down in terms of sound quality but then I haven't been using that quality anyway. Not to mention the array of speakers I would get rid of

Try disconnecting a load of your speakers so you end up with just a stereo. See if you mind the change. If so, then yes, remove it all and buy a soundbar.

because our living room is too small for a full set, we bought a Yamaha YSP-2200, quite solid sound with good surround effect. not a massive bar.

We did exactly as described -got rid of our old huge surround sound system & replaced it w/a Samsung Soundbar w/accompanying Bass Floor Unit in our family room

All our musical listening is done in the living room, the family room is Blue-Ray & HD TV
No regrets

Also we've gotten one of those wireless BOSE speakers that streams from Iphone, Ipods, Ipad etc - all of which we have. It gets a lot of use from everybody in the house. Also nowadays people walk around w/large libraries of music on their mobile devices. Takes just a moment for a guest to linkup & pay you something from their Smartphone, Ipod etc.My son & his teen buddies have basically gone this route-wave of the future (PLus BOSE sound quality is phenomenal)

Is Yamaha YSP-2200 still available? Where can I buy it?

Looks really slick and I'm also thinking of reconfiguring my living space and getting rid of speakers and trailing wires so it looks more like a living room and less like a studio. How much did you pay for the Canton box?

Think around 900 Euro at a dealer where I could listen to it. Internet was cheaper
