Jeremy Lin - A Star is Born

Post by skank-la » 12th Feb, '12, 09:01

I know most of this board is not American so you're not NBA driven but this story is pretty amazing

Jeremy Lin is an ABC (American born Chinese) from LA. Parents from Taiwan
Harvard Grad w/degree in Economics & 1st Harvard grad to play in the NBA ever.
Let me point out he is not exceptionally tall either.

Picked up late January this year as a freelance non contracted player he finally got his chance when the New York Knicks had a few too many injuries. He started playing in last week of Jan & he completely wowed everyone in his 1st four games finishing w/23 points against the Washington Wizards mid week.

He was still crashing on his cousin's couch in New York when all eyes were on Jeremy Friday night in his 1st nationally televised match against the Lakers at New Yorks Madison Square Garden

I'll let the video do the rest .....

He owned the knicks & the court & the crowd loved every minute of it

His mom is, I believe, ethnically Japanese. Or there is some Japanese connection on his mother's side (not surprising given Taiwan's past in the Japanese Empire). Interesting angle.

He just did it again... six wins in a row and all because of him. Where can I watch reruns of the games? I'm in Singapore.

He did it again. Lin marches on!

Senior management here where I work with the exception of myself is made up primarily of Taiwan or China born executives who's US born kids have gone to marquee US colleges (Johns Hopkins, UC Berkley, Duke, Northwestern) so you can imagine this story gets lots of conversation 'round the water cooler/tea pot'

Conversation yesterday was whether last night he (or anyone for that matter) could continue w/this fairytale performance (now we know he did)

The elephant in the room is thethat NBA sold the rights for live & rebroadcast of Friday & Last Nights games to a hungry Chinese market & you can bet today they are working out a rest of season deal for broadcast of Knicks games in China

Yao-Ming a giant of a man has retired & is now producing high end Napa Valley wine for the Chinese market & although he was good he was not a David vs Goliath type of player like Lin who needs to have superior skill & intelligence to do well among the giants towering above him out on the court

The balls on that guy are massive. To push everyone away with about 19secs to go and then go for his 3pointer with 3 on the clock is just ridiculous. Better than Teen Wolf !

Linderella!

The doubters said he would be weak when they played a 'real' team
Here the Knicks play last years champions the Dallas Mavericks
& once again the video tells the story. Even a 3 pointer right over Dirk one of the tallest in the NBA

This game was broadcast live to Taiwan & Mainland China & also got massive ratings here in the States
