I see that you can now apply for a Vietnam visa online. According to the website, you will be issued with an approval letter and you then pick up the actual visa on arrival in Vietnam
Has anyone actually tried this?

Yes it's ok but if you are at the back of the queue it can be a long wait on arrival ( last time up to 1 hour)

You can get instant visa when arriving at Hanoi price is around $21,- USD if I remember right. Another option is the Vietnamese Embassy but then you have to send your passport to them. I wait for 10 minutes only.
