Hong Kong - Hotel

Hi folk, pretty sure some of you must be popping thru HK fairly routinely - I only ever stop at the lounge bar on my way through. Going to do a brief stop over next trip, and I'm getting the mum unit up for a longer weekend. So be going for a twin share. Any recommendations?
Looking at something fairly central easy access to the main public transport, I want something nicer, decent breakfast option - not too plain and cheap, but not looking at ultra luxury either. Guess somewhere in AUD175-250 range. (Not sure yet if I'm shouting or we're splitting , though I'll probably cover as was my idea)

We'll be doing the normal stuff, up the peak, ferry ride, bit of a wander. Had pondered also a day trip to Macau - time will be filled very quick. Actually, and other of the must see or eats would be nice too.

Macau shouldn't be the top priority but it's a bit of quaint city and I quite liked it. Worth a trip

I used to like taking the local ferry (about 30mins from Central or a bit longer from Aberdeen) over to Yung Shue Wan on Lamma and having lunch there. They have some really good seafood restaurants, I had the best ever salt & pepper squid there, many times, and it was worth going for a walk around the place as well whilst waiting for the next ferry back. It is certainly a different and quiet side of HK to see. It might be too much of a time thing though if you are only there for a weekend, but still a thought.

Have a look at East Hotel in Tai Koo. Spent a few weeks there in Dec. Super trendy hotel, great harbour views, lovely breakfasts and very cool 32nd floor roof top bar. B+B should be approx HK1400. Not that central but the hotel is connected to the MTR so no hassle.

I enjoyed Macau, if only to pop into the Wynn hotel to check out the bling - amazing! About an hour's trip over on the Supercat.

I stayed on Lamma for a fortnight during the Handover in 1997. (I know Tas knows this.) The GBF lived there for a year and still tells the story of how he dragged me through huge spider webs to reach Lo So Shing beach (yes I did have to look that up) and I thought it was the only way to reach it until he took me back a much quicker way.


Getting the first ferry home on a morning after a night out was "fun" Went back a few years ago, it's changed quite a bit.

Do NOT stay at the Regal Hong Kong in Causeway Bay. Dire.

The 7's hotel I use in not one for you. If you want cheap, then Ibis North Point is the one, otherwise yes, something in Wan Chai or Central may be nicer.

I think I stayed in the Excelsior one time, nice enough.

Mr PP just got back from HK last night, he stays at the East Hotel (the same one Monkey Hanger talks about above) in Island East (it's above the Tai Koo MTR station and right next the CityPlaza mall) and he really likes it too.

It is very new and way better than the old place he used to stay in Causeway Bay. His only comment of any note is that the rooms were pretty small, (typical HK hotel really) but he loved the breakfast as well. It has some nice bars around it too, including a sports bar hiding downstairs.

South Pacific Hotel is central enough & nice enough but I can't remember what it costs. Definitely less than the Marriott, Langham, and other 5 stars.

Thanks for that recommendation fr East, that looks perfect interior wise, and on my budget target too. Will go and check out the maps, but as noted so long as we're over the MRT should be grand, and sounds like people are fine with getting around from there.

Just an add on - That 30day advance booking makes a nice difference to the total purchase price at East. And the reservation people have been very prompt to respond on a couple queries I had. Will likely book this afternoon, will let you know what the stay is like.

Tas, not sure what the extra charge is over the standard rate but try and make sure that you get a harbour view room on one of the upper floors. Unless of course you'd prefer to have a clear view into the HDB like appartments across the street

Well the tricky thing is that I couldn't seem to get an option for Harbour view with Twin Share - they are all Urban View, the additional charge wasn't that exhorbitant for me to consider that option though if available. You were possibly getting a corporate rate + the long stay rates were lower. Their log in page options set up was very good. But I opted for 'far away from elevator' as my priority (too much hotel experience here), then put a little note asking for a higher floor. Checked with the mum and turns out she gets the panics up too high anyway - so I figured we wont be in the room that much, and we can head up to that cool looking bar in the evenings.

Seems a bit odd that non of the harbour view rooms are twins..... Anyway, I'm sure you'll love it.

As PP mentioned, the huge Cityplaza mall is right next door to the hotel - plenty of opportunities to give the plastic a bit of a thrashing!

The recommendation for East, Hong Kong was exactly perfect for us. Many thanks. I am happily passing on the recommendation to others. I also plan to stay there in future as down time on the return leg over weekends.

The only negative I could find was that the bathroom glass did not have a pull down curtain or blind in the twin share room. Just that little bit of privacy when you are changing in that situation would have been nicer - twin share room people don't necessarily want to see each others bits just because they are sleeping in the same room.

I double checked on the twin Harbour vs Urban view, and they confimed it was to do with the design layout and only have double rooms on urban side. We were placed on 29th floor, so either way the view was very cool, and lovely to lie in morning with a cup of tea watching the large birds playing on the current.


Took me a little while to work out the relaxed uniform and no name tag concept, was a bit confusing why someone who looked like they were off the street was helping with my luggage - but did laugh once I realised (after several hours!!)

The beds were ridiculously comfortable. This is how lovely the staff are! My mother with the endless neck problems slept like a lamb. She's been on a 20yr search for the right pillow. So asks them who their supplier was - the house keeping promised to send an email, but for whatever reason couldn't get the email to work, so called my on the mobile yesterday with details including contact names. That is service beyond the norm if you ask me!!

We had great shopping days in hong kong as our hotel is located in the heart of shopping district of tsim sha tsui and above the gateway shopping mall. the room is superbly clean because the cleaning service cleans our room twice daily. we also enjoyed the spectacular view of the harbour. we would not hesitate to ask our friends to stay at this hotel.

Anyway, on the topic, I've subsequently recommended East to our Bejing office staff as a stop over, and info also went to an inlaws business partner taking the missus for a long weekend. So will need to get feed back on that trip if they found it ok too.;

Another recommendation for East coming up.

Pretty cool hotel, great rooftop bar, Sugar, and impressive gym...though admit that I didn't actually use the latter. Well, it is Christmas right Rooms are modern, well maintained and quiet - definitely go for harbour view on level 23 or above to avoid looking into the bedrooms of the HDB look apartments opposite!

The service was good - nothing is too much trouble for the staff and completed with minimal hassle. I left some feedback on their in-room iPod - nothing major but was met at reception by the Service Manager upon check-out thanking me for the comments and promising to fix for next time.

It's just that little bit further out as has been mentioned already and in a residential area with few nearby bars / restaurants - around 20-25 mins trip to central or 15 mins by cab.
