District 9
Anyone seen this?
Positive reviews, but seems like it not what it would seem.

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. Groucho Marx

That's your review? Gee, sounds memorable!Bender wrote:Saw it on the weekend.
I'd like to see this one. From what I've read it's just the kind of thing I'd like.
I also want to see Moon, Duncan Jones. Anyone see that one?
A woman walked into a pub and asked the barman for a double entendre. So he gave it to her.

Nice but a bit expensive. Do you really need to live in Orchard? D11 suits me just fine

Hey, nobody asked for a review, only if anyone had seen it.Lili Von Shtupp wrote:That's your review? Gee, sounds memorable!
Actually, I meant to write more than that, then couldn't really gather my thoughts (kind of a mixed up day today).
It was good. It definitely wasn't your regular run of the mill "alien invasion" movie, and I was dragged to the cinema with some trepidation, thinking it would be full of blood, guts and gratuitous violence. And there was blood and violence, but it kind of belonged. The story leaves the possibility of a sequel open.
It was interesting, thought provoking, and I'm now glad that I've seen it. If you're squeamish it could be a bit much, but really the shock value of some of the scenes is no worse than what's been shown on TV. I wouldn't take kids to see it.
I'd have to say it's one of the better movies I've seen lately. Recommended.
(Is that better?)

Saw this today at the cineplex w/the skankster
As soon as I heard a South African paramilitary susbstitue the Prawn' in a sentence that in real life would have been 'the kaffir' I knew this was no ordinary film.
Very good sci-fi & social commentary all rolled into one project
Excellent Film-Highly recommend.

Yep saw it last week - we good but different from what you might expect. And yes, a fair amount of violence.

Saw it recently as well . . . as Skank mentioned it is a very good commentary on Apartheid.

I thought it was excellent. Best film of 2009 in my opinion, and I hate Sci-Fi.

Re: District 9
Thought it was average. Did what it said on the box, but it's not a movie I'd watch again (and again). Hell, it's a weird love story really.

Watched it on the plane last month. It wasn't a good one to watch in the wee hours crossing the ocean and feel cheerful as one drifts off. Thought it was very clever, really well done (even though not a fan of that jiggly jiggly docu camera movement - makes me dizzy). I'm not sure whether I'd put in excellent category, but it was a heck of a lot better than average.

Re: District 9
we watched it yesterday on BluRay. thought it was absolutely brilliant. as Skank said a few months ago: the link between 'prawn' and 'kaffer' is quite obvious. had a bit of a smirk about the Nigerians running scams in D9 as well.
