Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher???

Post by Tas » 17th Aug, '11, 11:33

What was Lee Child thinking????? These are often my plane and work travel reads, plus I steal them from the other blokes on site who've finished with them, or buy at $5 from the second hand stalls - so I have a good soft spot for Reacher. And to find out they're putting Tom Cruise in the lead role is just plain disappointing, and silliness. You want to discover who Reacher is, not watch Tom Cruise pretending. And whatever, he IS 6'5" and that is important part of his physicallity what ever the supporters say. I'd have much preferred Viggio Mortenson physicallity - at least he can look like a proper hard bastard and look good in unwashed jeans and weeks old shirt!

Eeeew, that is disappointing. Can't see Cruise in that role at all. Shouldn't it be a Daniel Craig type??

I'm sure we could draw up a decent list of better options. Cripes, I'd far rather watch Liam Neeson in the role (I'm sure they could make up him to about early 40's). Plenty of examples where he's done a pretty decent action film.

I can't begin to imagine Tom Cruise trying to do the seduction routine and the odd bit of up against the table action either blurghhhh. Lets face Reacher gets it on with other toughish nature chicks every book, and doesn't mind their age - we like that about Jack :D

populist shelf novel M, author picked a psuedonym so he would be placed early on the shelf in alphabetical order. can't imagine it's particularly your thing ;) doesn't mean they don't have a value when you want to read about a root'n toot'n accidental vigilante

Hmmm...yes, physique wise then I think Tom Cruise is a poor choice, however, I've seen Cruise do a lot of different roles and hence may be able to pull this one off. My issue is that he's aleready got a franchise action role in MI series, this could be another one? Surely there was some unknown out there who could do a better job? I mean, Daniel Craig was not well known prior to Casino Royale.

Fair enough, before the nutjobness of Tom took over his presence, he has done some good action acting in the early days. But I agree with your later points completely Bob. It's a confusing choice where a relatively lower profile actor could do better with the role - Tom Cruise will confuse it. Similar to the Craig in the 007 role, Matt Damon in the Bourne series really did good things for that franchise.

(PS got me thinking about action films in general, found this list on IMD - http://www.imdb.com/chart/action . Not familiar with "Drive", and this film title cracked me up "Shirley Pimple in the John Wayne Temple of Doom " )

Drive has 1,000 votes whilst all others have 300k+ - I reckon Drive hasn't been released yet. Yup, 16 Sept 2011. I reckon it's the crew and their mothers who are hyping it.

Dunno, always saw Cruise as a one-trick pony, which got tiring after the first few good movies, but now can't get past the Scientologist thingy enough to take him seriously.
I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. Groucho Marx

Beginning or wherever - pretty sure I didn't start with the first one and it hasn't made a huge difference. Good, entertaining, easy reading action books.

I started with the last one, 61 Hours I think. They can be read very easily in any order, but doing them in order sometimes makes better sense with the stories.

Easy peasy stuff, they are what they are Daff. I think it's helpful reading the first one or two to pick up how he started out as the loner travelling across the country, and military background story - the one with the brother in the beginning kind of sets it up. After that it's not that important, Child writes them as stand alone stories. I've seen the odd reference to situations in previous novels - more of an inclusion / device thing for the reader to feel like they know the character and his history, but has no effect on the understanding of that individual novel. I'm a bit of a sequence girl m'self, but haven't noticed it as a thing for this set.

BTW Daff, I picked up a Quentin Jardine the other day as mentioned by HoD on the reading thread. My book is half way through the series and left thinking might have been better to go back a bit further. That said, it's a pretty detailed read, he gives all of his characters a story, including their private and work life, and several characters at that, so above average in a detective / police series, at least in this one. Didn't actually meet Bob Skinner until almos 3/5th through the book! Think it's pretty good so far so would say look out for him too.

I couldn't find the early Reacher books, picked up "One Shot" which appears to be mid-way through the series. Pretty easy, entertaining stuff as described, will look to pick up a few more should I come across them.

To your original post Tas - the physical description of Reacher in this book is so way off Tom Cruise, guess that's where acting ability will need to come into it, eh? !

:) Just picked up The Thousand, Kevin Guilfoile, at airport. Liking start so far to p77, will see how develops. Insert says has an earlier book Wicker that I'll check out if this one holds up. So if you've run out books like I have and desperate for fiction...
