While we're talking restaurants...

Post by slinky » 25th Jan, '13, 20:36

Taking off from T2K's Brotzeit thread -- if you are familiar with Smokey's on Joo Chiat Place but you live more West, you'll be glad to know that he's opening a new location at Sunset Way off Clementi. Not sure when but it is noted it on theirwebsite and I heard it from a source who knows :D

oh really... thats my neighbourhood. Smokey's is a fab place (joo chiat), great owner, genuine focus on the food and service.

One of my clients is a beer supplier there so work team have been a few times, and while i am not a massive fan of the all-meat, no green, massive USA portion meal in general, I have to admit that the food is delicious and a genuinely different taste to anything i have had in singers before.

If the owner doesnt fall into the expansion trap, should be a success.. ie. Joo Chiat is a success because he genuinely cares, shows face, and is very frequently (seems like all the time) there, and genuinely focused on what his resto produces and serves.

That's a mistake so many make, I think. If they have the resources of a company behind them, fine, but my favourite comfort food place here (sausage and mash!) was a slow burner and has become a huge success. The owner got the opportunity to take out a short lease on a 2nd location so off he went, and left his 1st to his staff most days. They were all competent but he is the face of the place, and he recently decided not to extend the lease on the 2nd.

I thought there was a ribs and bbq place in Sunset Way? Or are they taking over?

And a message on Facebook says: Hey everyone, we are now in the process of renovating our second Smokey's BBQ @Sunset Way. Our target is to have it open by the end of March, or sooner!

Look for us soon at 106 Clementi Street 12, #01-54/56.

Yes,

FB looks like they are replacing grillout,

which is where we used to go, it was great, then they branched out and it went all down hill. We stopped going,,, now will wait on smokies hopefully not the same problem...

Stick to simple good food, and avoid shortcuts like nuked cheap bread and disgusting soup and salad...

He's got someone working with him on this new location, so I assume one of them will be able to be around and make sure things are as they should be (at both locations).

I'll see if I can find out exactly when they are opening and, yes, let's try to plan a board outing!

There's a new Wine Bar at Holland Village just opposite Haagen Daz. Its the perfect place for a romantic and intimate dinner date or to even chill alone over a glass of wine! The wine by the glass is really cheap, and currently they have this promotion whereby u pay $28++, u get a 2 hour free flow of wine of 6 different choices!! its awesome!

You're can contact the marketing person at 97209777, shannon for reservations! Its really a nice place.

Not just me. Most people I know who know their wine avoid it.

Food is crap too.

Any brief bit of time in Hong Kong, have enjoyed the food, let alone at higher restaurant standard :) definitely miss local Asian food, north to south. Even with strong immigrant culture of Sydney. Its always about the salty garlic hot oil and chilli..spring onion and variation in greens/herbs regionally, lots of, with practised hand was part of my conclusion in simple terms. I love the fried eggs in China even in bodgy hotels, crispy and runny yolk, basically deep fried with the wok.

Made myself hungry!

Though mentioned restaurant sounds Italian lol

Went last night, chicken wings were awesome, the ribs were ok... Not stellar in my books but happy to try the back ribs, and have more wings.. The staff was a bit bumbling, but they have only been open since weds.

As for red dot beer, bleh
