Keith Floyd's restaurant - Patong Beach, Phuket

Post by Fat Bob » 5th May, '08, 12:10

Went to Phuket for a weekend and had a nice meal at Keith Floyd's restaurant in one of the hotels there. And I must say, the meal was great!

Price was ~$150 a head including a bottle of wine each, and had crispy duck starter, beef fillet with foie gras and then sorbet. Considering the quality of wine we had, the quality of the food and tyhe fact Keith came over and spoke to us for 5-10 mins, then it was an absolutely fabulous experience. I've had much worse meals for more money in the past, so very happy there.

Keith did mention that he's about to open a restaurant in Singapore soon, though much was "still under discussion" so he couldn't tell us too much about it. Will be interesting to compare!

Anyhow, if you are in Phuket and for some daft reason you want to have a higher quality meal, then this place would be great.

At least he was there. His pub in the UK - the aptly named "Nobody Inn" - was dire and the food cooked by a menial...

FB, you do know why they all end up in Thailand rather than HK, Singapore or Tokyo :?:

Nope, why do they end up in Thailand rather than HK, Singapore of Tokyo?

(Is this a joke or smething? Hope so!)

Must say, I think it's going to be a bit more difficult in Singapore, there are some excellent restaurants here with top quality chefs producing things at reasonable prices. the only thing that pushes the price up in Singapore is the wine.

And I'm very certain you'd find in most restaurants in the world it's the menial doing the cooking. the chef is the creator, the menial is just the labour. Like architect and bricklayer.

He went to my school.

Fair point FB, but you would expect him to train the bricklayer. Even Gordon Ramsayt takes more care in ensuring the food is up to scratch because, after all, if it's sh*te, you blame the organ grinder, not the monkey so it's his rep that's on the line.

Floyd, Irish? He was born in Somerset.

But yes, you would expect it to be good. It certainly was in Phuket!

Nah, no joke FB

They'd make tons of money if they set up here or HK or Tokyo, and the respective gov agencies would be tripping all over themselves to smooth things out for the set-ups.

That, however, is not what interests our boys who end up in Thailand...

They like the Shanghai Surprise, the Magic Wand, the Dixie Chicks

Not saying that's why our man Floyd is in Thailand tho...

Maybe he really does want the locals to gag on his absolutely horrid cooking on a daily basis

His cooking is, actually, very good. As for the katoys, he did go to an all-boys public school...

Just going from experience. The food I have eaten that he has cooked has been very good.

But, yes, I would stick up for him - that's how the Old Boy network works...

Good to sea there appears to be a decent restaurant in Phuket. I always thought the lack of good food there made Bali the much more appealing destination. I still struggle to find a restaurant in Asia I like more than Kafe Warisan.

i like Keith Floyd. any chef who can manage to get seriously sloshed on TV every single show and still keep his program (and do a fair bit of good cooking in the process) is ok in my book.

reckon he'll be seriously grey haired now, if he still has any left. i used to have his hangover book (Floyd on Hangovers), but it got lost in one of the intercontinental moves.
