Preserving Antiquities
I finally got round to unpacking the last box of my final shipment from UK and rediscovered some old newspapers and magazines. I have copies of the Illustrated London News from 1934 and 1946, plus copies of the Daily Mirror from the 1920s. They make fascinating reading and even the adverts are entertaining. Our female Forum members would get a giggle out of some of the lingerie ads, e.g. "Rustproof Corsets, only 12s/9d". The car ads are fascinating too for all the original UK makes like Standard, Armstrong Siddley and Lanchester.
It would be a great shame if they just fell apart. I need to preserve them somehow before Singapore's humid climate condems them to a mouldy death. Anyone got any ideas as to how to preserve these precious publications, or do you know a specialist that could help? I can't scan them a) because I don't have a scanner big enough and b) even if I did, I don't have the time to scan every page.

I heard about serious comic collectors getting their special editions packed in Nitrogen-filled bags. That may be overkill, and I wouldn't kniow where to start looking. You may want to have a word with those shops that sell graphic novels, comics etc - there's one upstairs at the Serene Centre.

I think a few of the board antiquities use gin......

And also speak to framers like Framing Angie, she may be able to recommend you to someone and also the museum. I too have some very old title documents and would be interested althoug they have survived 8 years of being in a paper bag in a cupboard without priblems. Shows they made things tough in the old days! Didnt they Spike
"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

I am thinking of having my grandmother's kilt framed. Probably look weird, but it will keep it safe.

Re: Preserving Antiquities
Besides the already mentioned Gin you could look at some high-end camera shops who sell dry cabinets (normally used for lenses).

Wouldn't that potentially dry out the paper or cloth? I'm sure both should have some moisture, just probably not 90% humidity that you get here!

Re: Preserving Antiquities
Cost and power consumption could be an issue with dry cabinets. Also, most that I've seen are not very big. Another possibility: some kind of large sealed plastic storage container (mega-Tupperware), with silica gel or damp absorber in it might do the job. You'd have to keep an eye on the damp absorbing material and change it every so often. I think silica gel can be re-used if dried out in an oven.

You can adjust the humidity in the dry cabinet http://www.eurekadrytech.com/pro01.aspx and money should be of no concern for a true collector
