What issit?
We found this wee thing outside our office last night, in a very busy urban street. Poor thing almost got flattened by a size nine boot.
It didn't seem like your average mouse or baby rat. What issit?

Re: What issit?
If we'd left it on the street I think it would soon have been bird food. I was wary of moving it out of its habitat but it seemed to be in shock, crawled into my friend's bag and was happy to stay there.
Wildlife place wasn't interested so today it's been set free in the park, letting nature take over.

Re: What issit?
On the phone they said it sounded like "a mouse" so they were not interested. The person that took it home and has been googling all morning thinks it might be a (very lost) heath mouse but I'm not so sure.
Tail looks quite thick for the size of it.

I don't think that looks like a mouse...maybe a field mouse - actually a quick 'chocolate' shows some similarities to a field mouse

I'm surprised it's comfortable being handled by humans. Could it be somebody's pet that got out?
A woman walked into a pub and asked the barman for a double entendre. So he gave it to her.

Re: What issit?
Hmmm, very different colouring from the kangaroo rat although the snout and paws look similar.
Lili, last night it was definitely stressed and just needed to hide, but it does look quite happy to eat out of Ant's hand, doesn't it? Can't think it would be a pet around there although there are some apartments nearby. It was very cute.
Was hoping Morrolan Attenborough or Burbage Corwin would have dropped in by now but then they both have special days today so may be out.

Re: What issit?
The more I look at it the more I think it's a young gerbil. I can't imagine a wild creature would just eat in someone's hand like that. It's a good thing you didn't give it to the wildlife place. He probably would have become food for one of their birds or snakes.

Hopping mouse is the closest so far. It must have been on its holidays, though.

Re: What issit?
Aw it is so cute, it doesn't look like your average mouse, but it might be one of the native types. There are hopping mice that live in NSW and up the coast.
If you really are interested in knowing, you might be able to find out what it is/was through local museum or similar.
We used Museum Victoria to identify a small animal we found. You just need to send a picture to them.

Hmmm it is some sort of hopping rodent. Lovely little thing!
"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

Re: What issit?
Well today when I went out for lunch I spotted another one, squashed flat on the pavement There's a nest somewhere out there, I reckon. Or maybe in our groundfloor carpark - hmm, that's a thought worth following up on.
