Just found this info:
------
The first thing you need to know about adding smoke when grilling is that it takes time for foods to absorb smoke flavor. If you are not planning on grilling your food for more than 20 to 30 minutes it probably won't be worth the effort.
------

So my steaks won't really catch the smoke flavour, Cool, no need to worry!

anyway, next time you pop into Coles, that Curtis chap is pictured on a free pamphlet for summer period describing all the different cuts of meat and best use for them (part of their hormone free meat promotion  ) anyway, not a bad pick up now you've got a gas BBQ - particularly as it will be using local terms for the cuts.

It's not true though. A ten minute steak on charcoal definitely has a wood smoke flavour, which gas does not have.

From the OED. Note the origin: food cooked ON a raised wooden framework of sticks.

barbecue /0ˈbɑ:bɪkju:/ noun. M17.
[ORIGIN Spanish barbacoa perh. from Arawak barbacoa raised wooden framework of sticks.]

► †I 1 A wooden framework for storage, sleeping on, etc. M–L17.

► II 2 An animal broiled or roasted whole, esp. out of doors; meat etc. cooked out of doors on a frame over an open fire. E18.

3 An outdoor entertainment at which meat is cooked on a frame over an open fire. M18.

4 A wooden or (now esp.) metal frame for cooking, smoking, or drying meat over an open fire; a (usu. portable) fireplace containing such a frame. L19.

► III 5 An open floor on which coffee beans etc. may be spread out to dry. M18.

Comb.: barbecue sauce a highly seasoned sauce used esp. with grilled or roasted meat.

As I said earlier, I'd love to do a blind taste test.

I have a super duper microwave/convection/grill oven thingy, does a great job, cost less than $200 from a Hardly Normal.

Love my combi microwave (although it cost S$800 quite a few years ago).

Been in the apartment since June and still haven't used the built-in oven, as the microwave one is a perfect size for meals for two.
