Re: Queensland Flood
I like graceville it has a very small town type of atmosphere and honestly a very nice place to live unless you know the what can happen. When I think of people's property values I think of graceville up until about 1990 you could buy really nice houses really cheap there and I wondered why they were cheap until I saw the pictures of the '74 flood. In the 90's the southerners moved up, thought it was cheap and prices skyrocketed. The horror pictures you are going to see on Thursday on the beep will be chelmer, graceville and jindalee.
The '74 flood traumatized the city, buildings in the CBD still have a maker on the walls indicating how how the water got. This one is going to bigger. 10,000 homes expected to flood 100,000 will be without power. This is going to hurt bad!
Nice thing happened, I saw a star in the night sky tonight, First time in about 2 weeks. Didn't last long a couple of hours later down the rain came again!

Re: Queensland Flood
My colleague is a vollie with the SES. He spent part of his NY break in Rockhampton and got an email 2 days ago asking if he would fly up again, committing for at least 3 days. If he hadn't been in Singapore by then en route to Kota Kinabalu, he'd be there now.
I have extreme admiration for him and others like him that do a full-time job, have families, and often spend their weekends with the emergency services.
Including rescuing people who go out sticky beaking at floods. KK - behave yourself!
Just catching up on the morning news...79 people still missing

Re: Queensland Flood
Thanks Mr Oz. We like it here (wet or not). Excellent location and leafy suburb etc. We think we will be ok - a lot has started going under but we are in the middle of the high side - though if there is a huge surge then we are going south. The neighbours seem pretty cool and we are watching the river. I will pack a box just in case and we will be ready to go. 2pm today the tide rises so we watch and wait.

For those outside Australia who'd like to see what's happening:
Web streaming of ABC News 24 is normally blocked from access overseas, but the service has temporarily removed that restriction to ensure Australians overseas can access its ongoing coverage of the Queensland floods.

Re: Queensland Flood
It's probably a good idea to keep a calm head on folks. KK needs to assess the height position of her property against the elevation estimate of the models and then add a meter for safety. KK my family for the most part is fine, the folks are at a good elevation in Ashgrove (though the Ashgrove Golf course is a raging torrent and my dad is horrified about that, it is in a valley point). The main issue there is from the torrential rain which is creating something akin to Waterfalls along Jubilee Tce and off Water Works road - clearer weather eliminates that. Their main stress was Dad getting off George St yesterday - he walked home LOL. And they were all a bit concerned about food access over next week, so they stocked up on staples. The sister is at a good elevation at Cannon Hill. That area wasn't affected by '74 floods. Main issue is being closed off by low lying roads. The brother is most impacted in Windsor. He was happy to stay - wants to watch how high it gets (boys eh). Don't think it's too clear how much or otherwise that area is at risk, but the creek near their home is steadily rising. Either way the wife's visiting mother in law was having a big time major freak out, and wife was pretty messy, so they've now evacuated out to the brother in law place at one of those inland suburbs off the western freeway - main issue for them is they potentially can be stuck out there for days due to road closures. Stay safe KK, assess again this morning, and move up hill if can - keep in contact with that neighbour in case you need an address

Just to add further insult to injury, it looks to me like there's a cyclone brewing east of Australia. The Bureau haven't tagged it yet, but that may be just to stop panic. Let's hope for everyone's sake it goes somewhere else, a cyclone on top of all this isn't what anyone needs.
Re: Queensland Flood
They have opened all the gates on the wivenhoe but still the dam is filling faster then they can release. Absolute worse case scenerio possible is the dam reaches maximum and the wall or something gives way then there isn't a flood its an apocolyse.
What happens when it exceed the dam limits? over the top? Dam wall fails?
If it was me I would be out of Graceville now!
Anyway I think it's too late I would expect KK would have lost power now or very shortly will... Good luck and hold on!.
Thankfully it has stopped rain for now and the sun is out! So with a bit of luck we might survive this...
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/environ ... 19mgt.htmlWivenhoe Dam has reached 190 per cent capacity and is continuing to rise, despite increases being made to controlled releases.

Without wanting to make light of the situation, I find it amusing that at the end of the day, Mother Nature is causing you the most risk to your life than any far out conspiracy you've ever been able to come up with.
Anyway, take care guys.

Re: Queensland Flood
mmmm everyone else I speak to in Brisbane (and been on the phone a bit in last couple days), no one is speaking with quite the same tone (and this includes the engineer crowd.) anyway, the first picture is the road I used to go down to the University, the Fred Schonnel drive - dont' think the old all wheel drive Subaru would manage that lot. Quite a few good images of KK's suburb too. Also there is a goodie of Nash St, which is basically right next to one of my old rentals, used the laundromat on one of those corners regularly!

Re: Queensland Flood
just read that our place in Victoria is now also on flood alert...
Re: Queensland Flood
Yeah but no real risk. I'm much happier here then where KK is. No flooding and we still have power. Very good sign. Waters should peek in about 2 hrs. Let's hope KK makes it through. She will probably not have power until at least sunday if not longer.baloo wrote:Without wanting to make light of the situation, I find it amusing that at the end of the day, Mother Nature is causing you the most risk to your life than any far out conspiracy you've ever been able to come up with.

Graceville is under water!
Update: KK street is not listed as being flooded yet but she is completely surrounded by flood waters.

Re: Queensland Flood
Wivenhoe has been closed in order not to add to the flood hitting Brizzy. capacity still at 190% down from 191%.

225% is absolute max. At that point no one knows what's going to happen.

Re: Queensland Flood
and you know this how? while i admit it's probably an exagerration of someone seeing an overlarge trout, it's theoretically very well possible as bullsharks are known to live as far a 50kms upstream from the coast.Mr Oz wrote:There's no bull shark at goodna...Morrolan wrote:http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011 ... 111496.htm
