I have a nas full of photos and videos but it tells me I have to sync them with iTunes before I can view them on this piece of crap.

Well, that's a shame. Seriously, if I need 3rd party software just to view my photos, videos and files without having to first steer everything through iTunes, then someone (Steve Jobs) is having a laugh.

How can Mac/Apple fans tolerate this or are they just so used to being told what to do and how to do it by Big Brother that they've now accepted their fate as the only alternative to life ?

Have to admit that I haven't felt the need to access my pics etc on my iPhone but for normal home network use (ie mac to mac) there is no need to use iTunes/iPhoto if you don't want to. All my movies etc are on a NAS and an accessed happily through Plex (yes third party but free)

also bear in mind the although iTunes and iphoto may not be the best applications in the world, they are free and easy to use. For a lot of people that is enough.

I'm not using an iPhone, it's an iPad. Surely you can see the need to view videos/photos while at home ?

Yes of course, all I am saying is that since I have an iPhone not an ipad then it's not an issue for me. If I did have an ipad I would want to access content. Photos will be no problem as I use iPhoto, tv and movies will be a bigger issue- exactly the same one that stopped me getting an Apple TV.

You get your knickers in a twist about Apple controlling what you do, as opposed to making it easy for the average user to do what they want.

Actually, it was the wife who said "How can I see our photos on the NAS, this screen is really good" which started the investigation. I'd call her an average user.

She was gutted when I told her that as it stands she won't be able to stream the latest downloaded Desperate Housewives episode to the iPad so she could watch it in bed.

Perhaps you should have worked all this out before you bought it? If you want to carry a family of six from a to b you don't buy a sports car and then complain you don't have enough seats.
