the "list" of icons at the bottom of my screen

Hi

Thank you in advance for your patience!

It's driving my crazy - the list of icons (you know for Word / Firefox / Itunes etc etc) that live at the bottom of my screen keep removing themselves like there isn't enough space or they just get bored being there.
I know on other Macs I've seen the icons just shrink to squeeze in and don't jump ship at every opportunity....

Any suggestions on how to keep them there?
Thanks

Buy a pc. Buttons stay where they should be.

Clicking with two fingers should get you into a context menu. Otherwise, go to system prefs under the apple menu and fiddle around with the dock preferences.

If you open an application that is not in the dock from The Finder, an icon will appear in the dock while the application is running and you can switch to that app by clicking on the dock icon. When you close the app, the icon will disappear. You can either (as mentioned) right click and select Keep In Dock, or you can drag the app icon from the Finder to the Dock. You can remove apps from the dock by just dragging off. The icon will then vanish in a puff of smoke

No right click? Like you've only got one button mouse? How quaint. Or how backward.

Have to say, while apple excels at most design when it comes to mice they're useless.....shift, or alt click but really buy a good mouse. I like trackballs

Found a mouse from logitech that has worked on every surface that I use it on, including glass. Fantastic indeed.

Look for Darkfield Laser Tracking.

If you are talking about the whole dock (row at the bottom) hiding and reappearing when you drag the mouse down there, you can stop it from hiding by going into settings and selecting dock and then turning off the auto-hide function.

Ok ... so specifically where should I "right click" because I right "clicked" in a bunch of spaces (spaces = open desktop space on my computer) earlier and no "in dock" stuff happened.......

However....what I fail to understand is that this is stuff that I've had opened for days and weeks and months and then decides to peace out....
All my apps are in Finder under app put they are not in my Launchpad....does that make a difference

Where is Neo? Neo????

It's an honest question.

If you know your way around PCs and Windows, and you need this for work as well, why did you pay top dollar for something you don't know how to use properly ?

In fairness, I have figured my way around this including unix commands and perl scripting, however...this is something I didn't expect as I figured it was like a Start bar (evidently not) on a PC ...but you know if this is the worst I have to put up with for the rest of the convenience and ease for what I need it for I'll take it.

so excuse me for not being 100% literate....

Ah, fair enough. If you know enough to get your hands dirty under the bonnet then you're fine. You're just headbutting Apple's way of wanting you to do things.

Nothing wrong with learning to drive on both sides of the road, so to speak, is there? :P

Didn't you know learning a new OS is good for the aging brain?

Sure, if it's done in your spare time or as a hobby. But if it's going to affect your work then it's not the wisest thing to do.

BTW, How TF does one use perl scripting as a work around for this issue?

No worries. I am elbow deep in Linux at the moment and badly scarred by incorrect rsync scripts. How I long for the good old days.
