hershey's chocolate syrup

Post by Satellite » 27th Aug, '13, 08:22

Does anyone know how long hershey;s chocolate syrup lasts once opened and stored in the fridge?

Been trying to find out from their website and google search but just can't seem to find any answer.

Until the expiry date? I don't think it makes any difference whether it has been opened or not as long as you are storing it correctly. A bit like sauce etc.

Only worry about sauces etc that have "use within XXXX days of opening" or similar.

Worcester Sauce gets better with age. Or at least Lea and Perrin's does!

Doubt it would taste good on your ice-cream however aged.

thanks PP. I always threw it away after a month on opening (I do store it in the fridge though). I didn't realise it could be used until the expiry date after opening. All the money I had wasted buying new ones every month!

I would say about 10 or 15 years.

Why would you eat Hershey's chocolate? Don't you live in Cadbury's land?

You mostly worry about the use before dates. There is usually a micro reason around those. The best before dates are mostly about performance, for example in bakery products you might get less rise or whatever measure you are after. Products that say use within a week of opening, think that mostly about micro as well, however if use clean utensils for contact, don't dip you fingers in, store in fridge etc they stretch longer, it is a conservative guideline, I'd be comfortable with up to 3 weeks even month with some of those items. With dairy use your senses. If I have milk, cream, custard past use by date, I still trust my nose and taste.

Choc: nothing beats Hershey's chocolate syrup (not their chocolates though...their chocolates are horrible but the syrup is good)

Tas: thanks I missed differentiating that. Just noticed it is a 'best before" date on it and am surprised that it can last so long once opened as I would think it is made up of milk which wouldn't last that long surely even with preservatives?

I have to agree, I don't like Hershey's chocolate at all, but love their syrup. There is something in the taste and consistency that makes it better than most of the others.
