Wow, just read
this, which is basically the obituary of a surviving WWII vet who obtained a VC during some of the fighting in Burma. The account of his rush on the 5 (!!!!) machine gun emplacements is just breath-taking. A true hero, putting his life on the line for his comrades and a country that rarely gave the Gurkhas a fair deal.

...and it's this sort of hero that the MoD is trying to avoid paying a reasonable pension to...
Gits...

Read a bit about Afghanistan too.....Gurkha machine gunner got clipped above the eye by I think a bullet, though it might have been ricochet or even shrapnel. He sits down, has a smoke, gets back up, and carries on firing. Fantastic bravery. No wonder the Moaist insurgency in Nepal is a difficult battle, all of them are like that!

I read a book called "Ayo Ghurkali!" years and years ago. A bit "Boy's Own" and old-fashioned but full of info. No idea who wrote it or if it's still in print.

if i'd need to do an assignment could choose any one unit for back-up and support, but only one, it'd be Gurkhas.
most undervalued (by the British government) troops in the world.
