Telephone Spam

Not a day goes by without at least one person calling to tell me I'm very luck to have been selected for a mobile phone, I've won a holiday, blah blah.

I've just told one young lady (Filipina, I think) that she called me yesterday and I still don't own the phone line so bye bye. I've quickly learned to say that at the start of the convo and then hang up. Some of them are automated calls - I don't listen long enough to find out what they're for or how they work.

I would ignore the phone but my mobile is so unreliable that Neo and the GBF usually call me on the landline, so I often run from another room to answer.

Aussies - is there a way of opting out of these or has the damage already been done? How about http://www.donotcall.gov.au ? Does it work? I'm not sure if we can become unlisted in the phone book but imagine the damage has already been done.

we are unlisted but still get the odd call. donotcall.com.au is said to be pretty good.

I never get called. I think they've blacklisted me.

Well give me a clue - just how badly did you have to swear at them first?

I have several characters that I use. The dirty old man never fails with female callers, though sadly there seem not to be so many of them any more.
Time Lapse Bob is pretty good. He answers the question before last. Then there's the Elvis impersonator...

They're all getting a bit rusty though. Maybe I should put a sign on my gate to try and attract some Christians...

Do Not Call only covers calls originated from Australia - you register the phone numbers you want them to exclude. I've registered my home phone and mobile. At least I'm not contacted by Telstra or any other local business organisations with whom I have no relationship with. The DNC register will allow charities, as well as companies with whom you have / had business. I'm still contacted by a local business called the Gotta Getta Group just because I used them to do my house reroofing three years ago!

Me neither.

Then again, maybe it's because I don't have a handset.
