Telephone Spam

Not a day goes by without at least one person calling to tell me I'm very luck to have been selected for a mobile phone, I've won a holiday, blah blah.
I've just told one young lady (Filipina, I think) that she called me yesterday and I still don't own the phone line so bye bye. I've quickly learned to say that at the start of the convo and then hang up. Some of them are automated calls - I don't listen long enough to find out what they're for or how they work.
I would ignore the phone but my mobile is so unreliable that Neo and the GBF usually call me on the landline, so I often run from another room to answer.
Aussies - is there a way of opting out of these or has the damage already been done? How about http://www.donotcall.gov.au ? Does it work? I'm not sure if we can become unlisted in the phone book but imagine the damage has already been done.
