So Snowden released all these top secret spying (badly designed) powerpoints about how the U.S. is secretly collecting data?

Is anyone really surprised?

But now for the conspiracy theories.
Where is Snowden?
In China?
In Iceland?
In an Ecuadorian embassy?

He is no where to be found, and the media speculating on his leaving HK and how hard it could be?
but he does not have an arrest warrant out on him, or a request for extradition, so he is free to move around as he pleases.
And the strongest words I have read from the US govt in news is, Obama is having a discussion on the possible ramifications.

All in all a storm in a teacup at the moment.

I remember back in the 1990's there was a Sunday morning special (when commercial TV believed in quality news still) on the NSA and the facilities they used to monitor phone calls and emails to filter flag words. The revelations recently seem hardly new but seem to have unsettled the US - especially on the back of the 4th Amendment smack down the Supreme Court handed down. I admire the bravery of this guy but unlike the Pentagon papers - not as many people will care and if he is court he will spend a long life in prison

But he did it after working for them for 30 odd year. Don't remember a media storm.

In a 2011 New Yorker article, journalist Jane Mayer wrote that Drake felt the NSA was committing serious crimes against the American people, on a level worse than what president Nixon had done in the 1970s. And this wasn't a media storm.

It dd take them a long time to indict him.

Think they are trying to get this information out?

You can't have 100% security and 100% privacy - Obama makes sense. I have always assumed that all emails and phone calls are monitored anyway. Most of us Have nothing to hide that would be of interest to national security. There is a small percentage of people who are pure evil so give the people that we have entrusted with our safety the power to stalk the buggers.

Saw on the BBC earlier that Snowden will likely be refused entry to the UK (seems it's thought to be one of his potential destinations) notwithstanding he still hasn't been charged with any crime.

Baloo, Daniel Ellsberg was charged and went to trial. The judge through out the government's case due to the gross governmental misconduct and illegal evidence gathering and dismissed all charges. The FBI had illegally wiretapped him and broke into his psychiatrist's office looking for damaging information.

Presumably, he (Snowden) was under some kind of oath and terms of secrecy and knew there were criminal implications to what he did.

If he had told a reporter and the reporter had leaked it, the reporter would (should - the US gov't seems to want to change this) be protected by the 1st Amendment. He seems to want the attention, though. Well, he's got it.

Relief that he's no longer their problem perhaps since he's reportedly departed HK and is on his way to Moscow / Iceland / Ecuador or....
