SPAM Helf

Post by Spike » 12th Sep, '08, 09:45

I've tried applying Outlook 'Rules' to try and ditch spam. I've set up rules to trap emails with certain words in the header or body and dump them in the 'Deleted' file, but it doesn't seem to work. I'm now thoroughly pissed off with getting 50-60 emails daily offering to make bits of me bigger or let me see a picture of Anglina Jolie's nipples.

I use POP3 email via my hosting provider's server in the US, which also hosts my website. The other reason why I want to protect my email account from all this crap is that I'm going away for two weeks in October and will be accessing my email via my shiny new Nokia E71 and I don't want to download piles of rubbish into the phone everytime I log on.

Can anyone recommend a good piece of anti-SPAM software I can use to get rid of all the bollocks that hits my email account every hour.

I've got AVG free version, but as far as I can see it's only an anti-virus scanner, not a spammer scanner.

Cloudmark.

I've used it for 5 years now. Catches 99.999999% of the spam.

Costs me about $20 a year I think but well worth it. I receive about 200~300 spam emails a day.

Oh, I get it now. You actually wanted to know HOW to spam, not block it. I can confirm your spamming system is working.

So you got my newsletter. That's not spam, that's valuable information and nothing to do with enlarging your todger or a sneak peek at Jolie's nipples :D

Hmmmm....won't you need this at the server end?

As far as my limited knowledge will go, you client (Outlook on your home pc) would pull down the mail. The anti-spam tool would then delete it. The email would still sit on the server, so your Nokia phone would then download the email as well....

.....or would the Client on home pc delete the spam off the server aswell? In which case, yes, it would work.....but not sure it works like that does it?

My outlook client is configured so that when I delete an email. (or move it to deleted items) it deletes it from the server.

I think you're right. The anti-spam software will plug into Outlook and shift spam to the deleted file. As Baloo says, I could set the Outlook client to delete from the server every time a message hits the local 'Deleted' file. But if I'm overseas and not using Outlook, only the phone, I'll still get the junk unless I can install anti-spam at the server end. Guess I should enquire with my hosting provider.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Good suggestion but it's difficult to change my business email address as all my clients have it, all my corporate stationery includes it, web site etc. etc.... And I know you're going to say, "No wonder you get so much spam" but when you're in business for yourself you have be visible and contactable. Even if I did change it I'm sure it wouldn't be long before the spam flooded in again to the new address. Interestingly I get very little spam through my Hotmail account. They must have an efficient filter at the server level.

Hotmail are pretty good - they use customised Trend Micro tecnology.

There you go, a little piece of trivia to amaze your friends with.

No charge...

I suppose this comes down to how you plan to download your mail on the Nokia and whether you can leave the pc on at home, and trust it to stay on.

Yeah, server side!
