Pope is stepping down
Debatable if he was the pope the church needed but at least he wasn't clinging onto power like the last one did.

I don't do the twitter thing but a friend shared this on FB, made me chuckle:

Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.

If I'm understanding the news reports, he's the only Pope to have resigned in around 600 years. So, did most of his predecessors die on the job? Or were they voted out of office?

They normqlly just stay to the end...dying in the job. Happens a lot because most of them are so old when they become Pope. The way I see it this one was quite intelligent in taking retirement.

Yup, I think one stepped down voluntarily (some 600 years ago) and one was forced to step down. That's the good part of the job... you can't be voted out of office. The only way out is to step down yourself or die.daffodil wrote:If I'm understanding the news reports, he's the only Pope to have resigned in around 600 years. Re: Pope is stepping down
Given that the Pope is appointed by God through the mechandism of the concave (however you spell it) it would seem an affront to quit... Cant help but to be cynical and see that he wants some hand influencing the successor who is bound to be a strict conservative
