The poors can't learn piano?

Post by inneedofsources » 11th May, '11, 16:36

Hi guys, I'm new here and I need some opinion to verify a problem which I think is relevant to most of us and genuine.

Do you think that people from middle class and below have very low opportunity to master music instruments especially piano and violin or even guitar?

From what I have noticed is that most youngsters who learned or are learning the above instruments came mostly from well-being families. However, for those that are not under this above category, they do not have a chance to learn their desired music instrument due to their financial problem.

This is a project I'm working on, hence I hope that some of you could give me some opinions or some statistics that can prove that this problem is genuine.

Thank you! :D

Ok, I'll bite.

Are you trying to show that children of lower socio-economic status have less opportunity to learn to play musical instruments because of their lower socio-economic status or are you trying to show that they don't have the same abilities as children from well-off families? Your post confuses me.

Erm, so sorry, this is my first time doing this.
What I'm trying to say is that most youngsters from middle class or facing financial problem are unable to learn music instruments like piano.
I hope this clear your confusion?

Ps: Is this how i should reply to your comment?

So they are unable because they lack the financial means to attend a music centre? There are of course numerous community centres that provide cheap music lessons to lower income families and there are plenty of rich kids whose skill set plateaued with guitar hero... I think you may need to rephrase your question for clarity.... Either way you will find the parents level of engagement with their children coupled with their respective interest in music will directly affect the child's ability to play.

To be honest, I still don't know whether you think the youngsters are 'unable to learn music instruments like piano' because of their inability to afford lessons and/or instruments or for some other reason.

But, if you are trying to do some kind of report or study, how can you use anecdotal information from a group of people you know nothing about to prove anything? To find stats or information on the group you are talking about ('the middle class or those facing financial problems') shouldn't you find a focus group that fits that profile to use for your 'research'?

I'm doing a survey on the number of stupid people on the net. I'll add 1 to the "stupid" list.

agree that not much opportunity as they cant afford the fees for learning musical instruments of their choice (in particular piano, violin) Perhaps less so for guitar? or those instruments offered in school bands as lessons on those are free.

Dunno, but guys like Elmore James and John Lee Hooker might find the proposition amusing.

On a slightly different note, is it my imagination, or was there another post that's been deleted?

The poors I worked with in Singapore were too concerned about having no shoes to go to school in, or money to buy the necessary books, to worry about buying a piano.

Hell, most of them were sleeping like sardines in their one bedroom HDBs, where TF would they put a piano?

Nothing stopping them, they can poll all they want.

Lots of poor people have learnt to play musical instruments they couldn't afford. Even more poor people have had to listen to poor players play poorly.

Go and read a book by Malcom Gladwell called Outliers and you'll find most of this question answered in a nice anectodal way, with some source information, then apply accordingly to Singapore. Then take note of Kooky comment.

You may want to add the total number of Singaporum members to that list....
